After being hit by the truck, the first thing that came to mind was nothing special.
It just hurt like hell.
Of all times, my forgotten memories came rushing back while I was crossing the street.
And while I was standing there, clutching my head from the headache it caused, the truck came and hit me.
Ten years of life on the run had gone to waste.
I had never expected to die like this, and I certainly had no desire to receive the package.
"……."
Was this how a fish felt when it got hooked and hauled up from the depths?
Deep in the waters of a bottomless abyss, where I couldn’t see or feel anything.
I was caught on something and dragged toward somewhere I didn’t know.
Was this hell?
Was I being judged, only to fall not into heaven but into hell and suffer forever?
In the end.
Once again, memories flashed past me.
The many people I had met, the many things I had gone through.
Memories that would have driven a normal person insane.
For someone like me, who had lived an entire life carrying the past and the consequences it had caused into the future, those fleeting memories were anything but a pleasant experience.
If only.
If I could wash away my sins here and find peace and rest.
Just as I was thinking I’d rather choose hell and stopping myself from thinking any further.
"……Oru-kun? Kao...ru-kun?"
Someone called my name.
In my half-dreaming, half-awake consciousness, my eyes found a light and moved toward it in a daze.
I could smell the sharp scent of medicine.
The dry, rough texture of the bedsheets brushed against the tips of my tingling fingers.
I twitched my uncooperative limbs and torso, trying to move my body.
It was an instinctive action, like a baby crying the moment it entered the world.
"Haa—"
After a long time, the first thing I said as I broke free from the sleep that had bound my body like ropes was.
As I forced air into my shrunken lungs and exhaled the breath I’d been holding with all my strength, the first thing I said was.
As I faced the doctor shining a flashlight into my eyes and snapping his fingers noisily to check whether I was conscious, the first thing I said was.
"What the fuck. Shit— what the hell—"
That was me demanding to know what the hell kind of fucked-up situation this was.
