Chapter 41: Inquisition - 1

Kate was an ordinary nun. The kind of nun you might find one or two of in any church.

She herself knew she was plain.

There had been nothing especially grand about why she became a nun, either.

She had simply lived in the convent since birth, watched the other children around her strive to become nuns, and followed along into the sisterhood herself.

Even before her first period, she had memorized every teaching of Goddess Helia and stayed up through the night studying scripture so she could spread true love she had never experienced herself.

Like most nuns, Kate simply drifted through life that way.

And she had assumed she would continue living the same way in the future.

If she had talent, she might become a senior nun, but Kate knew perfectly well that she had none.

She would probably live as a junior nun, just like most others.

And never know a woman’s pleasure for the rest of her life.

At least, that was what she had thought until then.

"Kate, did you hear the rumor?"

"What rumor?"

"About the new girl joining our convent."

"New girls join all the time."

"Not like this one. She’s pretty old. I heard she’s twelve."

"Huh? That is strange."

Considering that most nuns had lived in the convent since birth or from a very young age, this new arrival was highly unusual.

"And I heard on the way here that she came from a brothel."

"A brothel? The place where prostitutes live?"

"Yeah, that’s right."

"Ugh, that place is filthy."

"Exactly. I have no idea what the Mother Superior is thinking."

What was more, she came from a brothel, a place shunned by the Church of the Sun.

Because of that, most of the nuns began to avoid the new girl even before meeting her.

Kate was no exception.

"Did you hear? Reina has already started wielding holy power."

"Is that really true?"

"Reina is definitely going to become a senior nun."

"Fuck, what if she remembers us looking down on her and gets revenge?"

"Hey, keep it down! If the seniors hear us, we’ll be the ones in trouble."

Holy power was a miracle that took nuns more than a decade of training to wield.

Reina had accomplished in just three years after entering the convent what most nuns could never attain even after a lifetime of training.

Seeing that, Kate felt hollow.

Reina was a junior far younger than her, and she had spent even less time at the convent.

Yet she had already reached a place above Kate. It felt as though all of Kate’s own efforts had been denied.

"Is that story true? Reina is a saintess candidate?"

"Yes. I clearly heard the cardinal sent by the order tell the Mother Superior himself."

"That’s impossible..."

She was only a candidate in name. Once the Hero appeared, Reina’s position as saintess would be assured.

And she had achieved that before even turning twenty.

Considering the ages of saintesses throughout history, it was overwhelming talent.

Thus, the nuns who had initially regarded Reina with disdain were collectively thrown into shock.

Only a few years earlier, she had been beneath them. Now, she was a being from another world altogether.

Even the nuns who had initially been jealous of Reina came to revere her afterward.

What is this?

But Kate could not revere Reina as ordinary people did.

It felt as though her once-ordinary life had been reduced to a tool for making Reina shine.

From that day onward, Kate secretly followed Reina.

She recorded everything Reina did, including even the smallest details of her movements.

Her reason for going so far was simple.

To leave a stain on the life that seemed so perfect.

She had been blinded by jealousy to that extent.

. . .

"Sister Kate, Sister Reina insists upon her innocence and demands an inquisition. Will you accept?"

"I accept."

"Since both sisters are willing to undergo an inquisition, I, Claudia, shall conduct it under my authority as an Inquisitor. In accordance with doctrine, I will also employ the Scales of Balance."

The Church of the Sun’s inquisitions differed from ordinary trials in several ways. The greatest distinction was that the presiding judge could invoke the Scales of Balance, a miracle that discerned truth from falsehood in testimony.

Naturally, false testimony could not be given, and any testimony judged true could be used as evidence.

"I saw it with my own eyes. I saw Sister Reina lead Brother Ian into her room!"

"True."

"I led him to my room to teach him doctrine, as part of carrying out my duties as a nun. I swear in the name of Goddess Helia that I committed no other act whatsoever."

"..."

"Inquisitor?"

However, even the Scales of Balance were not perfect.

When someone possessed powerful holy power like Reina, they could not function properly.

As a result, Claudia was unable to tell whether Reina’s rebuttal was truth or falsehood.

"Sister Reina, you are impressive indeed, as expected of a saintess candidate."

"I’ll take that as a compliment."

At Claudia’s words, Reina lowered her head in thanks.

It was not that she truly took the words as praise. She was merely showing how confident she was in the current situation.

"Inquisitor, Sister Kate has suspected my chastity merely because I, while performing my duties as a nun, was with a member of the opposite sex. That is clearly an act of denying a nun’s duty."

Reina launched her counterattack.

She meant to turn the trial around by questioning the duties of a nun.

But Kate was at ease as well.

"I did not intend to bring this up, but I saw Sister Reina committing adultery with my own eyes."

"This too is true."

Kate was a woman who had prepared for this day in order to expose Reina’s flaws.

She had not entered the inquisition based on mere suspicion.

"You heard that, Sister Reina! Give up now and confess your sin!"

"Really? I think someone else is the one who needs to confess."

Yet Reina declared that confidently.

Then, before everyone’s eyes, she invoked holy power.

It was more radiant than before and held even greater strength.

"H-how?"

"If I were not chaste, I would have lost my holy power."

"No! I definitely saw it! I saw you fucking that man!"

"Inquisitor, I believe this proves my chastity."

With a victorious smile, Reina looked at Claudia.

But Claudia calmly assessed the situation.

"This is not easy. One person is speaking the truth, while the other is wielding holy power."

It was a complete contradiction.

After silently pondering for some time to resolve it, Claudia issued an order to her direct subordinate.

"Cassandra, bring me the horn of the holy steed."

"Inquisitor!"

The holy steed was a unicorn known as Goddess Helia’s mount.

And a unicorn’s horn possessed the power to discern virgins.

"This is unfair treatment. Reina has shown her holy power. She is innocent."

"The Mother Superior’s words are reasonable. But Reina is a saintess candidate. It would not be difficult for her to wield holy power through holy water. Furthermore, the Scales of Balance do not work on her."

Claudia spoke as she stared at Reina.

The eyes visible behind her mask were ice-cold.

"I am sorry, Sister Reina, but as an Inquisitor, I cannot tolerate even the smallest stain of suspicion."

"F-fine. Let’s do it, then."

Apparently not expecting Claudia to go this far, Reina looked flustered.

But trusting Ian’s words, she placed her hand on the holy steed’s horn.

. . .

The unicorn horn Reina touched remained a pure, unchanging white.

"No change. Sister Reina is a virgin."

Even though the hand of Reina, who was not a virgin, had touched it, the unicorn horn did not change.

How had she, the woman who had offered her virginity to me, been certified as a virgin?

The reason was simple.

Unicorns in this world are obsessed with faithful love.

Everyone thought unicorns were animals that only liked virgins, but that was a misconception.

Unicorns simply hated women who were promiscuous and had indiscriminate sex. They liked women who loved only one man and remained faithful enough to hold them in reverence.

It was only because faithful love was rare in this world that, contrary to the unicorns’ true intent, they came to be seen as virgin-obsessed creatures.

After all, this is the world of an erotic game overflowing with humiliation, adultery, and NTR.

They were the mounts of Goddess Helia, who spread faithful love in the first place. It would have been stranger for them to loathe women who practiced it.

Of course, if it had been the horn of a living unicorn, it would scrutinize every aspect of the faithful love between body and mind. But that only applies while it’s alive.

A horn separated from its unicorn, like this one, had far looser conditions for certifying faithful love.

Somehow, I ended up proving Reina’s faithful love.

This was why I had originally delayed pursuing Reina.

I had wanted to quietly let the event where the Inquisitor bearing the unicorn horn came to visit pass by.

But Reina truly loved me, and proof of that was the Mark of Love that had manifested on her lower abdomen.

Then there was no need to fear the unicorn horn.

I’ll have to fuck her to my heart’s content later.

Once I confirmed things were proceeding according to plan, I stepped forward toward Claudia, who was conducting the trial.
