Chapter 84: Round 81 - They Would Have Been Justified in Resenting Him

Clear streams of tears ran endlessly down the two women’s cheeks.

It was such a fragile sight that no one would have believed they were [Primordial Demons], beings revered by countless others.

And yet, this was Rain and Misery as they were now.

Now that they had become almost like ordinary women, this was their truest selves in the present.

An ordinary beginning.

Just a few utterly ordinary moments... that was all it had taken for them to change.

"...You want me to teach you painting and cooking?"

"Yes. They’re things I’ve always wanted to properly learn someday... Is that possible?"

"Hm... well, sure. I’ve been bored lately since I had nothing to do anyway, so I’ll make a special exception and teach you!"

At first, he had only been a new junior to them.

"Misery. You’re still working?"

"Yes. Rain caused trouble again... It looks like I’ll have to handle it myself."

"Then... you helped me before, so let me help you a little too."

"...! Thank you..."

Then, at some point, he had become someone they could talk to with ease.

And then,

"Here, this is for both of you."

"Hm?"

"This is..."

"It’s my way of thanking you for looking after your junior for a whole year. It’s not as well made as yours, but it’s pretty decent, I think."

before they knew it,

he had become the one they loved.

They liked how considerate he was, and they enjoyed talking with him.

Whenever they watched him smile or pout, a smile would naturally rise to their own lips. And whenever they saw him quietly working hard where no one noticed, or training with complete seriousness, their faces would heat up for reasons they couldn’t explain.

Without even realizing it themselves, Rain and Misery had slowly grown fond of Adelio. Slowly, they had fallen in love with him.

And the reason the two women finally realized what those feelings inside them were... was jealousy.

Whenever he occasionally let that longing expression show, the one he wore when he missed [Blanc], a surge of emotion and jealousy would rise in them without warning.

Because no matter how deeply they loved him, his heart was still fixed on one person alone.

They hated that, and part of them wanted to force his heart to turn toward them instead.

...But that was impossible.

"Hehehe, it’s been a while. [Blue], [Vert]... or should I call you Rain and Misery now?"

Because the woman he had longed for so desperately had finally appeared at his side.

No matter how much they struggled, the outcome had already been decided.

That was why, when Guy had them isolated, they had all but given up.

Repeating to themselves that there was no hope anymore.

*

But they had been wrong.

That thought had been wrong.

"...It’s okay. I’m here."

As though he had stepped out of a hallucination they had been trapped in for ages, he suddenly appeared right before Rain and Misery.

At first, they mistook him for an illusion. But as his face gradually came into focus, they had no choice but to realize he was real, and before long, they slowly wrapped their arms around him.

They would have been justified in resenting him, and yet they did not resent him at all. Instead, they were happy—happy that he was here with them when they had thought he would be at [Blanc]’s side, happy that he had come to see them instead of ignoring them.

The very fact that he had come here meant...

"...Hic... You’re late, you idiot..."

"...Thank you, Adelio..."

...that he had already given them the answer they had wanted.
