Chapter 9: Memory 5: Admission

One week after taking the entrance exam

One letter arrived at the orphanage addressed to me. It was an acceptance notice from U.A. I opened the envelope to check the results and found a card inside. When I pressed the button-like switch on it, an unexpected figure appeared.

"I have been projected!!"

For some reason, the style was different, and the person was muscular. It was All Might.

"You there, boy watching my video!! You’re probably wondering why I’m on your acceptance notice. The reason is that I’ll be working at U.A. this year."

In the video, All Might explained why he appeared there and said that starting this year, he would be working as a teacher at U.A. High School.

"Now then, Sorano boy!! You passed the written exam with an average score of 98!! And with 53 points in the practical, your acceptance is beyond question!! But that wasn’t all we were looking at!! A Hero isn’t just someone who defeats enemies, but someone who helps others—that is the essence of a Hero. That’s why the practical exam also counts Villain points and Rescue points for helping people. Your Rescue points were 50, giving you a total of 103 points, the top score!! Congratulations!! And welcome!! This is your Hero Academia!"

'I passed.'

I thought that to myself and turned off the card. Then I felt someone’s gaze and looked over. The children living with me at the orphanage were staring at me with shining eyes.

"All right, but you have to share it nicely."

At my answer, the kids cheered and took the card to watch the video again. Seeing that, I felt quietly pleased and satisfied.

I told Minori and the old man Tokoro that I had passed.

"Congratulations on passing!! Taka-kun!! I knew I could count on you."

"Hahaha, of course you passed. I made the equipment for you, so it only makes sense."

The two of them congratulated me and said they would throw a celebration party, then treated me to a meal when we went out. After eating, I bought flowers and stood in front of the graves.

"Father, Mother, it’s been a while. Ever since that incident, I came to hate Heroes. I lived thinking I would just make money and lead an ordinary life. But somewhere in my heart, I guess I still couldn’t give up on admiration. I saw my dream in the boy in my class who had no Quirk like me. Father, Mother. I got into the Hero Course. I still can’t see what lies ahead. Even so, please believe in me and watch over me.... I love you."

With tears streaming down my face, I finished paying my respects.

"Sir, may I come in?"

"Yes, come in."

I had come to the old man’s house to receive "it."

"That uniform suits you well. Is today the day?"

"Yes."

I had put on my uniform. The smell of new clothes and the scent of spring flowers seemed to announce the start of a new school life.

"I see. Oh dear, look at me. I finally finished it."

What the old man handed me was the weapon "he" favored in his dreams. A weapon that could silently kill an opponent, and the symbol of the "organization" to which "he" belonged. The Hidden Blade.

I strapped it onto my left wrist and activated it.

Clang!

With a familiar motion, I triggered it, and the blade sprang out with a metallic sound. Then I retracted it again, satisfied that it worked properly, and thanked the old man.

"Thank you, sir."

"The making of it itself didn’t take much. But I spent quite a while on it because I designed it to be lighter and easier to use. I’m glad you’re satisfied. Now hurry along. You wouldn’t want to be late on your first day, would you?"

I thanked him once more and headed to school.

'So this is U.A.'

As I confirmed the place where I would spend my new school life, I passed through the gate and thought to myself.

'I want to get up high and take in the layout.'

It was the fastest way to get my bearings, but for some reason I felt like I’d be scolded, so I gave up on the idea and headed to my classroom instead.

'Is this Class A?'

I admired how much bigger the classroom door was than I expected, then opened it and went inside. No one was in the classroom, so I put my bag down by the window seat in the back row and sat down. I must have arrived earlier than I thought, because I closed my eyes for a moment and lay face-down on the desk, trying to sleep.

"Don’t put your feet on the desk!! Aren’t you sorry to the U.A. upperclassmen and the person who made these desks?"

"No, I’m not. What middle school did you even come from, you extra!!"

I woke up to a noisy commotion. The one over there was Bakugo, and the person pointing it out was the honor student who had criticized Midoriya at the exam. Nearby, Midoriya, with his green hair and plain appearance, was blushing as he talked with a girl who had a round face and brown bobbed hair.

'So he got in too.'

Seeing Midoriya, I confirmed that he had passed and woke up fully. Then I noticed a strange object.

'What is that?'

It looked like a yellow sleeping bag. And from inside it came a man’s voice.

"Go play friends somewhere else. This is... the Hero Course!!"

The man said this while lying down and gulping down konjac jelly. He slipped out of the sleeping bag and stood up. He was around 180 centimeters tall, wearing black clothes, with his hair and beard unkempt. He also had something like a bandage wrapped around his neck.

"It took you eight seconds to get quiet. You’re not very rational. I’m Aizawa Shota. I’m your homeroom teacher. It’s sudden, but put this on and come out to the field."

Most of the students looked bewildered, but they followed the order of the person who introduced himself as their teacher and changed into gym clothes before gathering on the field.
