Quirk Society
In China, a baby who emitted light from every part of its body sparked the emergence of superpowers called "Quirks," and crime rose as a result.
And what arose to stop them were the "Heroes."
And this is the story of me admiring heroes.
When did it start? When did I begin to think that wanting to become a hero who helps people was the right thing?
"Someday, I’ll help people just like a hero does!!"
I always said it with a bright smile, almost like a habit. But the people around me looked at me with dark eyes.
Quirkless
People who do not have a Quirk in a Quirk society are called "Quirkless."
Even so, there were people who cheered me on.
My parents, my father and mother.
"That’s right. Taka will definitely become a hero."
"Taka, the most important thing a hero must have is the heart that wants to help people. That is the starting point of every hero. Remember that."
I couldn’t fully understand my father’s words because they were too difficult, but it felt like he was supporting my dream, Sorano Taka’s dream.
I threw myself into helping people. Picking up trash, giving directions to people who were lost—I felt rewarded whenever I helped someone.
And then, one day, I met two boys.
A boy with yellow, spiky hair was tormenting a plain-looking boy with green hair and freckles, making explosions in his hand.
"Deku, how dare you try to beat me! You’re so arrogant!!"
"N-no, Kacchan. I wasn’t... trying to do that. tremble"
I stepped in to stop the spiky-haired boy and shielded the green-haired boy.
"Huh? Who the hell are you? Move aside if you’re not involved!!"
"I’m Sorano Taka. I won’t forgive anyone who bullies others."
As a result, a fight broke out. Mostly, I just got hit.
But I hit back too. And the spiky-haired boy turned away, shouting, "Damn it!!" before heading back home. The green-haired boy asked me if I was okay.
"Of course I am. I’m going to be a hero, so this much doesn’t bother me."
"Amazing. I want to be a hero too. But... I don’t have a Quirk..."
I looked at him.
We’re the same.
"It’s okay!! I’m Quirkless too. Even so, I’m going to become a hero and help people!! That’s my dream!!"
The green-haired boy could only stare blankly before he teared up and asked me, "Can I become a hero too?"
"Of course!! I don’t think something like that matters when it comes to helping people. If you’re lacking something, then you just work harder. You can become a hero."
The boy cried as he etched those words into his memory, along with the sight of the boy standing before him who was just like him...
"Ah, no—I’m going to be late getting home. Sorry, I have to go."
"W-wait a second?"
As the green-haired boy tried to tell him to wait, the other boy ignored him and ran off immediately.
"At least tell me your name..."
As Sorano Taka ran, he worried about getting home late.
I’m going to get scolded at this rate.
And then
The gears of tragedy began to turn.
