Chapter 16: Memory9-1: USJ

We arrived at our destination, got out of the vehicle, and went inside the building. Beyond the entrance were collapsed structures, artificial-looking mountain terrain, and a ship floating over a massive pool.

"This is insane!!"

"Is this the USJ?"

As several people shouted, someone appeared to answer us.

"The Unforeseen Simulation Joint, or USJ! A training facility equipped to respond to various disasters, including drowning accidents, landslides, and fires!"

"It's Thirteen."

"Wow, it's Thirteen, my favorite Hero."

Space Hero Thirteen. It seemed like Thirteen was a Hero who focused mainly on rescue work.

After explaining what this place was, Thirteen raised one finger after another and said there was something to explain before class began. Thirteen explained their Quirk, its dangers, how it could harm people, the purpose of this lesson, and how to use a Quirk to save people. We listened in awe and applauded. When Thirteen finished, I sensed something was wrong. Aizawa-sensei must have felt it too, because he and I both turned around and went on guard.

Then, amid the black mist spreading below us, Villains appeared.

"Everyone! Stay together and don't move!! Thirteen, protect the kids!! That's... a Villain!!"

At the teacher's words, the students' faces were painted with confusion and fear. We gathered together and stayed alert.

Then the Villain in the black mist spoke to the Villain with countless hands, and that Villain listened...

"Ah... I came all this way with a large group to kill someone, and he's not here? The Symbol of Peace. Then..."

Would killing the kids bring him here?

Aizawa-sensei gave his orders. He told Kaminari to use his Quirk to send a distress signal over the radio, told everyone to evacuate, and charged toward the group of Villains. Using his Quirk and his scarf-like weapon, he took on multiple enemies at once. While Aizawa-sensei held off the Villains, Thirteen and the rest of us tried to evacuate as instructed, but the Villain in the black mist blocked our way.

"I won't let you do that. Pleased to meet you. We are the Villain Alliance, and our purpose in infiltrating this place is to kill the Symbol of Peace, All Might."

The Villain stated his goal and seemed about to use his Quirk, but Bakugo and Kirishima launched a surprise attack. However...

"How dangerous. Very dangerous. Even as students, you're excellent talent."

The attack had no effect. Then the black mist swallowed us. For some reason, it felt like I was floating in midair. When the mist cleared, the scenery had changed. There were no obstacles around us, and it felt like we were high above the place we had been before. Nearby were Villains and people I recognized: Yaoyorozu, Kaminari, and Jiro.

We had been scattered to different places by the Villain's Quirk and were fighting the Villains there. Yaoyorozu was creating weapons with her Quirk, and the rest of us were fighting using our own abilities.

"Electric boy, take them down already."

"You know I was your partner, so you should know this. I only wrap myself in electricity! I can discharge it, but I can't control it."

Men really do go on and on about everything.

"Then use this. Go, human stun gun."

"Whaaaah!"

I kicked Kaminari and sent him toward the Villain. But the result was...

"Heh heh heh, thanks for handing me a hostage. I'm a lightning-type Quirk user too, so electricity won't work on me. Drop your weapons and put your hands up. Otherwise—"

The Villain laughed as he spoke, pressing a knife to Kaminari's throat to threaten us.

I made a mistake!

Kaminari froze, too scared of the weapon in the Villain's hand to move.

"You three handled us well, but this is as far as it goes. Everyone, attack!"

It was my fault. If I hadn't made that mistake...

Our faces darkened at the thought. I regretted putting everyone in danger because of my own error. We stayed on guard at the Villain's words, but...

"Hey? What are you doing? Attack now... h-huh?"

The Villain trailed off and looked around. What was going on? We looked around too, just like him. There were Villains collapsed or unable to move, and aside from the one right there, there didn't seem to be any others left standing.

The Villain stared at the scene in confusion.

"Getting distracted? You're awfully relaxed."

A voice came from somewhere, but I couldn't tell where. The Villain looked around, trying to find the owner of the voice, but no one was there. Then one of the fallen Villains screamed.

"It's him! It's him! He's not human!! He's the Grim Reaper... The Grim Reaper came to kill us!!"

Neither we nor the Villains could make sense of that. Then...

Shhk

At the sound from somewhere, we were startled again and looked around. Then we turned our heads toward the Villain. He had let go of Kaminari and was on his knees, screaming. And we could guess the source of that sound.

A knife was embedded in the Villain's shoulder. And in front of him, we could see the back of someone familiar.

"Taka?"

I screamed from the pain in my shoulder and lost my hostage. Then someone was standing in front of me. They had their hood pulled low enough to hide their face, and they seemed to be looking down at me. I understood what the one who had screamed had meant...

The man moved his left hand, and with a metallic sound, a blade emerged from the inside of his wrist.

Ah... the Grim Reaper is in front of me.

I moved out of the Villains' sight and took them down. I knocked them out, threw my throwing knives, and used my Hidden Blade to stab and slash around their vital points, avoiding lethal blows as I subdued them.

And the last Villain left was begging for mercy, crying.

"Please, spare me. Forgive me. I'm begging you."

"No."

I refused his plea, and despair filled the Villain's face.

"You showed no mercy to the person in front of you, and now you're begging for mercy... How ridiculous."

I slowly approached the Villain, my Hidden Blade extended. Then I stopped and said one last thing to him.

"But I will show you mercy."

Then I retracted the Hidden Blade and punched the Villain in the jaw, knocking him out. After that, I turned my head and checked on Jiro and the others.

They're safe, thankfully. Then...

I quickly checked their condition, activated [Sense], and looked around. I identified the positions of the Villains, the teachers, and the students. Then I shifted my gaze to where the Villains had first appeared.

And there,

a Villain with his brain exposed was breaking Aizawa-sensei's arm.
