"Do not raise your blade against the innocent."

"Hide in plain sight."

"Do not betray the Brotherhood."

Laa shay'a waqi'a mutlaq bla kul'un mumkin

"Nothing is true, and everything is permitted."

I had lived my life bound to that creed.

I had lived as though my mentor were my parent, above even my own father.

And yet, perhaps because of the recklessness of youth, I decided my own judgment was better than that creed and acted on it.

As a result, I lost my closest friend’s arm and lost a brother.

By my own hand, I committed an irreversible sin.

My mentor gave me a chance to atone for it.

Consumed by self-reproach, I walked the path of repentance by assassinating the nine men who had fanatically clung to that creed and committed their crimes.

But...

"Old man, there is 'fire' in your hand!! You must cast it away!!"

My mentor was lost, drunk on blind power.

And I became the leader of the fortress on the mountain in search of an answer.

What about you?

Gasp!

I woke with a groan.

"Again... that dream?"

Ten years had passed since that incident. The dream where the man I had seen in the colorless world appeared. I still had it from time to time, even after all these years.

"Big brother, another nightmare?"

"You were sweating a lot and looked like you were in pain."

"No, I’m fine. Let’s hurry and go eat breakfast."

I gave a weak smile and told the kids in front of me to come eat breakfast, then got up and moved.

After that incident, I went to an orphanage. I had no close relatives, and the Heroes offered to prepare a separate facility for me, but I refused. I had become afraid to trust other people.

Especially Heroes...

After breakfast, I went to middle school.

In my familiar classroom, I hung my bag on my desk and read for a while before first period began.

"You’ve all already decided where you’re going, right? Well, most of you are probably heading to the Hero Course anyway."

The classroom grew noisy, and one particularly noticeable boy stood up, stepping on his desk.

"We’re not on the same level. I’m going to be a Hero who surpasses All Might!!"

Bakugo Katsuki.

He had a strong Quirk called Explosion and the reputation of a genius. He was rough with others, but he had a strange ability to draw people in.

I ignored his loud voice and kept reading.

I had already decided where I would go.

U.A. General Studies

I no longer admired Heroes the way I had when I was little.

All I thought about was getting a part-time job after school and earning money.

"Huh? A Quirkless like you wants to take the entrance exam for the Hero Course?"

At the word Quirkless, I briefly looked away from my book.

A plain boy with green hair and freckles.

Midoriya Izuku.

He had good grades and knew everything there was to know about Heroes, basically a total otaku.

But the reason I was interested was the word Quirkless. Someone like me, someone who had not been blessed with a Quirk.

I turned my eyes back to the book.

"You can become a Hero too."

Stop thinking about it. I already knew what reality was like.

The world was full of lies.
