Chapter 15: Memory 8: The Class President Election and the Truth

On the way to school in the morning, the media was gathered at the front gate, interviewing students about All Might and holding them up.

"Excuse me, student. What is All Might’s class like?"

When I saw the reporter who had also tried to interview me, I ignored him and went into the school. After my parents died, countless reporters kept coming to the hospital, asking me questions and trying to get material for their articles. That’s why I don’t like cameras or the media.

Thinking that, I went into the classroom, read a book, and waited for class to start. Then Aizawa-sensei came into the classroom first thing in the morning and began talking about yesterday’s Combat Training.

He pointed out to Bakugo that he shouldn’t do childish things, and warned Midoriya in the back that he needed to learn how to control his Quirk.

"And Sorano."

Hm? Did I do something wrong too? At the teacher’s call, I tensed up a little and listened closely to what he had to say.

"...You should rein it in a little. Even if you say to ‘train like it’s real,’ having someone pass out in class was a bit much."

Ah, so that was it. I had already apologized to Sero for knocking him out, but even I thought I might have gone a little too far.

As I was thinking that, the teacher turned serious and told the whole class there was something we needed to do. Most of us were tense, swallowing hard as we focused on his words.

"Today, we’ll decide the class president."

"""Something so school-like is happening!!!"""

Everyone started talking about their own pledges and expressing that they wanted the position, but one person called them out.

"Quiet! This position is a sacred duty that can only be held by someone trusted by those around them, that is to say! A proposal that must be decided by a democratic vote!!"

With his hand raised high, Iida’s words were not persuasive at all. When the teacher said it didn’t matter as long as it was decided during class, we started voting. The result was

Midoriya: 3 votes

Yaoyorozu: 2 votes

Sorano Taka: 2 votes

"Tch, I knew it, but still..."

Iida was gritting his teeth and crying tears of frustration.

"Then Midoriya will be the class president, and for vice president, the two of you will be candidates, so let’s vote..."

"I’m sorry. I’m withdrawing."

I cut in before the teacher could finish and raised my hand to say I was stepping down. At that, Yaoyorozu looked surprised and said,

"Why are you withdrawing? I voted for you because I thought you showed more activity than in the last training exercise and seemed to have the kind of leadership that could bring others together."

She was speaking to me a little excitedly, but I refuted her opinion and explained my reason.

"I don’t think I’m suited to leading others. And you have leadership too, Yaoyorozu. I also thought your [Creation] was the best [Quirk] for helping everyone in the class, so I voted for you. So please take care of it. Vice president."

Yaoyorozu looked at me in surprise, but after a moment she smiled and replied,

"Yes! Sorano, and everyone else, now that I’ve taken on the role of vice president, I’ll do my best."

After the class president election ended, we ate lunch in the cafeteria. I took out my lunchbox and put a piece of fried chicken into my mouth. Even when it cooled down, it was still delicious, so I often put it in my lunch. But while I was eating, a siren sounded and the broadcast came on.

"Security Level 3 incident. All students, please evacuate outdoors."

With that announcement as the signal, the students evacuated and the cafeteria turned into chaos. I looked out the window. The media had broken through the doors and invaded the school. I was about to tell everyone, but someone acted before I could.

"It’s fine!! They’re just the media!!"

For some reason, Iida was striking an emergency pose and calming everyone down.

The incident was settled, and Midoriya, the class president, said it was only right to hand the position over to Iida, so he gave up the seat. I raised my hand and gave my opinion.

"Um, shouldn’t we hear Vice President Yaoyorozu’s opinion first?"

The others focused their attention on Yaoyorozu, while Iida and Midoriya were apologizing to her.

"It’s fine. I saw your performance in the cafeteria today too, and I think it’s fine. And thank you, Sorano, for considering my opinion."

I bowed my head and said it was only natural. And then...

'Sorano, we were on the same team, and I thought you were amazing, but you’re my enemy!! I’m jealous you get to flirt with a girl!!'

For some reason, I could feel a hateful stare, but I ignored it.

'I voted for Taka too...'

I heard someone muttering, but I couldn’t catch it clearly, so I had no idea what they were saying.

Come to think of it, how did the media get into the school after breaking through that iron gate? ...Something feels off.

The next day

To carry out disaster-response training for Basic Hero Studies, we changed into our costumes and boarded the vehicles. Iida took charge of leading everyone and got on as well, but

"Damn it!! So that’s how the vehicles are built!!"

He shouted in frustration because the vehicle’s layout was different from what he expected.

"Midoriya-chan, I say what I’m thinking right out loud."

"Huh?! Asui?"

"Call me Tsuyu-chan. Your [Quirk] is similar to All Might’s."

"!!!"

Listening to Tsuyu and Midoriya talk, I was curious too. Midoriya, who I had thought was Quirkless, had recently manifested a Quirk, and its power was similar to All Might’s...

"Wait, Tsuyu-chan, All Might doesn’t get hurt, so it must just be a similar Quirk."

At Kirishima’s words, Tsuyu-chan let it go with a "Is that so?" Then they started talking about each other’s Quirks.

"Ribbit, come to think of it, what’s your Quirk, Taka-chan?"

Tsuyu-chan asked what my Quirk was.

"Midoriya still isn’t completely sure either, but you’re the only one whose Quirk we don’t know, Taka."

Kirishima seemed curious too and asked me. Most of the others’ eyes focused on me, and I opened my mouth.

"I’m Quirkless."

""""""Huh?""""""

For a moment, silence fell.

"Hey, Sorano? If you’re that embarrassed, you don’t have to say it, but lying is..."

"I’m not lying. I’m Quirkless."

Denki, with the yellow hair, said it had to be a joke, but I denied it and said it again. I was Quirkless.

"Then how did you rank first in the entrance exam?"

"My written score and rescue points were high..."

"Then what about that kick? That was way beyond just a kick!"

"I trained my body because I didn’t have a Quirk. That’s probably why..."

"Then what about jumping off the head of the 0-point Villain during the entrance exam?!"

First Ashido, then Kirishima asked questions, and when Jiro asked hers, the others turned to her with a "What?" before turning back to me again.

"I just jumped."

When I said it so calmly, everyone looked at me blankly, not knowing how to react.

"S-s-sensei?"

Kirishima asked the teacher in disbelief, but

"Ha... It’s true. That boy got first place in the entrance exam without a Quirk. There was no cheating."

After hearing that, most of them shouted in surprise or stared at me in silence. Midoriya, Yaoyorozu, and Mineta, who already knew, stayed quiet, and Bakugo...

'That damn bastard. I heard he beat me and got first place, but what? Quirkless? You’re telling me I lost to that Quirkless hooded guy?'

He ground his teeth and glared at me. I simply spent the rest of the ride looking out at the large building outside the window, wondering what today’s lesson would be.
