Chapter 2: Memory: Prolog 2

Cover View

I ran home.

"At this rate, I’m going to get scolded."

Thinking that, I kept my eyes ahead as I ran.

The sky began to turn ashen gray, darkening as if rain could fall at any moment.

Then I rounded the corner and stared at what should have been my familiar home.

I could only stand there, dazed.

At my family’s collapsed home.

At the person being restrained by several others while wearing a Hero costume.

At the police cars and officers flashing red and blue lights.

And at the cold corpses and pools of blood that looked like my father and mother.

Why? Wait... what is going on here?

No. No. No! No!!

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I ran toward my parents.

The rain that had started falling at some point drained the world of its color.

"You can’t go any closer, boy!! It’s still dangerous."

The one blocking my way was a tall, gaunt man with blond hair and blue eyes.

"Mom!! Dad!!"

Why? Why did this happen?

As if answering my thoughts, the man laughed with madness and shouted like a lunatic.

"Hahahahaha!! This is what the world is like!! Even after becoming a Hero, I still end up like this. If you look down on me, you’ll end up just like those guys over there!! The world is rotten, and people are insane. I’m the one who’s right!! Hahahahahaha!!"

What... is he saying?

That’s the Hero I admired?

I was crying, and the man beside me said something, but I couldn’t hear him.

The Hero I admired had killed my family.

And then something strange happened to me too.

The rainy, ashen world seemed to lose even that gray, as if the world had truly been stripped of all color.

Most people were tinted blue, and the man who had been rampaging a moment ago was tinted red. But the corpses that had been my family had no color at all.

What is this? What’s happening?

And then I noticed something strange.

Near the corpses that had been my family, someone who seemed to be a man was standing there. What was strange was the clothes he wore.

He wore brown boots, a red sash around his waist, and a white robe of some kind draped over his body, with a hood pulled low like an eagle’s. I couldn’t tell whether he was male or female because the hood was drawn so deeply that I couldn’t see his face.

And below that hood, I could make out a scar on the right side of the mouth, golden raptor-like eyes glowing from within the hood, and on his left arm, a suit of iron armor... a left hand missing the ring finger.

In a world that had lost all color, the only one still carrying color.

A man.

That man seemed to say something to me, but I couldn’t hear it.

And my memory ended with that man...

I lost consciousness.
