Chapter 11: Lost Memory: Hope

In a dark room, they were discussing something. Then one of them brought up the report.

"Sorano Taka’s written score was almost perfect, and his practical score needs no mention. Even though he could have earned more points, he gave up the points right in front of him to help people, and kept helping them. However... if there is a problem..."

Aizawa Shota, with his unkempt appearance, tired face, and goggles hanging around his neck, let out a sigh as he looked over the file containing Sorano’s information.

'Quirkless...'

Ten years ago, I received a report that a Hero was rampaging and arrived at the scene, where I found and subdued the Villain. But something was strange. The Villain was already exhausted, and there were visible injuries all over them, as if someone had fought them fiercely. Yet I had been the first to arrive at the scene. I thought it was odd, but I had to deal with the Villain in front of me first. As time passed, backup Heroes and the police arrived. And far off in the distance was...

'All Might and a kid?'

I had no idea why All Might was there with a child, and I was still wondering about it when the child’s scream answered my question.

"Mom!! Dad!!"

I saw it. A child who had lost precious people right before his eyes, and in that child I saw an old memory of my own.

'Shirakumo!!'

He died right in front of me. And now that five-year-old child was experiencing the same thing.

After the incident was over, I learned that the Villain had actually been a Hero who had gone berserk because he was dissatisfied with his ranking. The child had lost his family and had nowhere to rely on. The government suggested that a facility be arranged for him, but...

"Please go. I can’t trust Heroes."

Those words came from such a young child. A Hero had hurt him. I checked the records and learned that the child was Quirkless. Even so, in the box for his future dream, in crooked handwriting, it said "Hero."

'Reality is far too cruel.'

I stopped thinking about the past, and after the discussion, it was decided that the boy would enter Class A. Was there anything I could do for that Quirkless child? Would it be kindness to make him give up that dream again?

The day of enrollment came, and as always, I conducted the Quirk assessment test. And I kept my eyes on Sorano Taka, that student. Then I was surprised.

He used weapons in the test and achieved top-tier results. I thought it was because of the weapons, but I was foolish. That child had done his best and earned a score above the average.

'Does he have potential?'

That was what I thought to myself, and I resolved to guide him so that he would not stray down the wrong path.
