Chapter 1: Gudu (Gu Poison)

Gudu (蠱毒), or mugu (巫蠱).

One of the worst forms of sorcery, using insects that carry poison.

Since ancient times, the character for gu (蠱) was used to refer to insects in straw or in a vessel.

But over time, the meaning evolved into poisonous insects used to curse people.

A curse.

It came to be used as a word for all manner of impure poisons.

Nothing is known about its origins.

Most people are probably more familiar with the name Gudu (蠱毒) than mugu (巫蠱).

Gudu, when used for sorcerous purposes, means gathering poisonous insects into a dark jar and forcing them into a slaughter until only one remains.

In the process, the poison of the insects that shared the jar accumulates in the last survivor, until at last it is completed as a cursed vessel filled with thick malice and ill omen.

Because of the infamous use of Gudu and the danger it poses, the modern meaning of Gudu mostly refers to this kind of cursed vessel made for cursing.

But is this really limited to poisonous insects?

The idea of using humans instead of poisonous insects, whose spirits and cursed energy are far weaker, has long been passed down in secret.

Attempts to create human Gudu have a history of their own as well.

That horrific history left traces in the flow of sorcery that envelops the world,

and those traces were passed down as their inherited technique.

This is the story of me, Yoshino Junpei.

The record of the curses piled upon me, and the chronicle of my shedding my skin to become a single Gudu.
