In the five years since the war ended,
our clan rose to the very top among the gangs.
That’s right. Over those five years,
we crushed and subjugated every gang in Canada.
Having brought about nothing less than a great upheaval in Canada,
our clan was reborn in a form worthy of that infamy.
‘Raven Corporation.’
The company founded by our clan,
and the colossal corporation that had now swallowed up Canada.
Canada had become a corporate state.
My sister and I took office as chairwoman and vice chair,
while the others each became the heads of their respective fields.
Everyone worked passionately without regard for day or night,
working and working, staying at the company without ever clocking out,
strengthening and unifying our internal structure,
all while keeping busy dealing with external enemies.
During that process, the punishing workload
nearly worked several people to death for real.
Thanks to that, we did manage to grow at a breakneck pace,
but beneath my sister’s whip,
the manpower and talent being ground down had been us.
Only now, with the company stabilized,
had we finally begun to live lives where we could leave work.
But everyone had already become workaholics,
so they still worked even after going home.
My sister in particular
worked at home too, by ordering me around.
"Bane, could you bring me the comprehensive reports by industry for this month? They’re right next to you."
"Yeah, got it."
"Bring me those blueprints from last time."
"Those bizarre blueprints? I threw them out."
"Really? Then bring me the ones next to them."
The reports and blueprints my sister mentioned
were all classified documents with Level One security clearance.
Of them, the blueprints were the most important.
Only my sister was authorized to view them.
"It’s about time we found a new market."
"That’s why we’re expanding into the eastern side of the NUSA right now."
"Even so, the eastern market is too small.
We need to move into the west as soon as possible."
"The western side has already been carved up by huge corporations like Arasaka and Militech."
"But there’s a way."
There was that look again.
The expression of a mischievous brat planning a cruel prank.
"In Night City, there are districts even those bastards can’t touch."
"Pacifica? You’re planning to make it our foothold?"
"That’s right. So, you’ll need to go on a business trip.
A very long, very difficult business trip."
"I’ll go."
"Oh! Really? You said you’d really go.
Then you’re leaving tomorrow, first thing."
"Tomorrow, first thing?! No, that’s a little—"
"Why? The sooner you get it done, the better.
I’ve already prepared everything. You just need to bring yourself."
I’d been had.
She had been acting strange these past few days.
I should have caught on sooner.
"I’m counting on you, Bane."
"I’ll pack only the essentials and go."
"Sure. Here are the car keys."
The keys my sister tossed to me belonged to the newly developed
Firbolg pickup truck from the Old Car Series.
With its distinctive engine sound and appearance,
it was a popular line of vehicles.
My sister had taken quite an interest in it,
so I had driven one a few times myself.
"Get going already. How long are you going to stand there?"
At my sister’s words, I slipped the keys into my pocket
and headed into my room to look for anything useful.
I had always intended to go to Night City,
so I kept a certain amount of luggage ready at all times.
I packed only some newly released weapons,
a little fruit, and some money,
then went straight down to the garage.
I found the truck and loaded my things
among the luggage already inside.
Unlike what I would have expected from my sister’s vehicle,
the inside of the truck was neatly organized.
Grrr, grrr, grrr!
When I started the engine,
its distinctive rumble filled the air.
As I entered the destination into the navigation system,
the garage door began to open.
"Night City."
