It had been three days since I started staying at Kiwi’s place.
Until lunch today, I quietly repaired my gear in the room Kiwi had given me.
I also tried putting together some plans for the future, even though I didn’t really have any.
And I took care of the company work I’d been legally able to put off until now.
On top of that, thanks to the message my sister sent last night, I was thinking up a plan that could solve both Sasha’s debt problem and the company’s business at once.
Buy up the landfill grounds in the Eastern Badlands and build a large-scale farm there—
the money-draining company project, and the enormous debt of 4.4 million eddies.
To solve both of those at the same time, there was only one answer.
"A serf would be perfect."
That’s right! I’d make her work a side job.
I’d get her hired as the farm’s manager.
The starting salary at our company was two million eddies.
If Sasha worked for about two years without taking a single eddie, she could pay it off in no time.
The problem was the land. Between the price of land here, waste disposal costs, and all the other expenses, it would easily run into the hundreds of millions.
Sasha’s debt was a problem too.
Since I was trying to collect it nicely, it was taking too long.
How had Sasha’s debt gotten this huge in the first place?
It couldn’t have cost that much to save her.
An air hypo, Viktor, brain-cell regeneration technology,
treatment for her fractures, hospitalization fees, and so on.
That was a lot of expenses.
I never thought it would cost so much money just to save one person.
Even after the discount, it was still 4.4 million eddies.
I was supposed to be healing by watching David and Lucy fall in love.
So why did it feel like all I did was work myself to death?
Two years until Edgerunners begins.
In one year, V and Johnny Silverhand.
Damn it! All I wanted was to watch David and Lucy date, but there were way too many things getting in the way.
I came here to carve out a market in America while avoiding Militech—and to satisfy my own selfish desires while I was at it.
But after arriving, all I’d done was work, create a debtor, mooch off someone else’s place for three days, and leave.
Was I a Nomad or a businessman?
"I want to see David and Lucy in person."

Night City.
A city situated in the middle of the desert,
a city where countless legends emerged—and died.
Now, it was the last city where the broken American Dream could still come true.
"Put your foot down harder. At this rate, are we even gonna make it there today?"
"I’m already flooring it. If you don’t like it, you drive."
"Watch that mouth of yours."
"How about both of you keep it down?"
"Yes, Manager Green. We’ll be quiet."
A group of suspicious people rode toward Night City in a sleek khaki wagon.
For some reason, the inside of the car was noisy as hell.
They were all Nomads from Canada,
the employees of a mercenary who operated under the alias Kangal Spitz.
They were pitiful office workers being exploited beneath Raven Corporation, a Canadian company.
They were currently entering Night City through the Northern Badlands.
Fortunately, none of them had a terrible sense of direction.
"Team Two goes to buy the land. Team One follows the department head’s trail, and I’ll go see him."
"Finish everything by eleven tonight, then meet at the oil field in Northside, Watson."
"Old man, please get in touch with the department head."
The man they called the department head, Kangal, was one of the rare truly good bosses in the world.
He knew how to separate business from personal matters,
and he was the sort of true worker the chairman used hard because he had clear principles regarding rewards and punishments.
He was a boss with an oddly intense interest in Night City.
Sometimes, he would mutter unfamiliar names to himself and indulge in fanboying like someone his age would.
The more they learned about him, the better a boss he seemed.
"────Department Head, this is Howard.
We’re currently entering the city."
"────Howard, I have a favor to ask.
Could you get someone a job?"
"────If you give me their details and where you want them employed, I’ll get them hired immediately."
"────Sasha Yakovleva. She’s a netrunner. Please hire her as the on-site manager for the farm we’re building this time."
"────I’ll locate her, have her complete the basic training, and deploy her to the site immediately."
"────Treat her kindly, and process her salary as unpaid for the first two years."
"────I’ll see you soon."
Sasha Yakovleva’s future had been decided without her even knowing it.
She would never know that all the hardship awaiting her stemmed from one person’s devoted fanboying.
An Edgerunners crew had unknowingly seized the good fortune someone desperately wanted.
It would not take them long to grasp that fortune.
Though the journey would be somewhat difficult, thanks to severe carsickness and fighting with a reckless driver.
