Two pieces of happy news came in.
First, David had joined the Edgerunners.
And things were going well between him and Lucy too.
Second, our company had begun to properly establish itself here in Night City.
If there was one unfortunate bit of news,
it was that I hadn’t gotten to witness David taking the test.
More precisely, I got separated from the others
because I was pulling off some fantastic stunt driving for their sake.
Thanks to that, I got cursed out every which way,
and the car got showered with bullets.
Still, I decided to be satisfied with the fact that from now on, I could watch the two of them together.
Besides, Maine would cover the repair bill. Probably?
"Kangal, I’m sending you the address, so get here fast.
If you’re even a little late, I’ll kill you."
"Rebecca, regrettably, something like that will never happen again for the rest of eternity."
"Hey! Get your ass over here fast unless you want to die!"
"So, Rebecca, how was David?"
"Shut up!"
"I’ll be there within five minutes, so don’t be mad."
The address Rebecca sent was ordinarily about twenty minutes away from here.
Obviously, I wasn’t going to get there ordinarily.
Grrrr!
In this city, it was fine to push it to around ninety.
To cut a twenty-minute trip down to five, I had to put my foot down at least this much.
Otherwise, Rebecca, who was already a little pissed off, would heap curses on me by the bucketful.
I might even catch a few bullets too.
Even as I drove, my heart pounded like crazy.
Of course, it wasn’t because of Rebecca.
It was because of David and Lucy.
Just seeing David and Lucy together, even for a brief moment, made my chest tighten with emotion.
I guess I really was seriously afflicted.
At this rate, when I saw them start dating, I felt like I might burst into tears.

This was unexpected.
I arrived within five minutes, paid for all the drinks, and even exchanged a perfectly decent greeting with David.
Then, out of nowhere, Rebecca pressed a gun barrel to my head,
and Kiwi tied up my wrists and restrained me.
It happened so fast that I was subdued by them before I could resist even once.
"Why have you restrained me, Kiwi?"
"Kangal, you’d better answer honestly."
"I have always been an honest person."
"Then what’s this?"
"What is it?"
"Read it."
"Gloria’s treatment costs two million eddies.
We will contact you through Kangal Spitz on the day Gloria is discharged. _B.B."
This was the shard I had left for David.
There was clearly nothing strange in its contents.
Other than my alias being written there, nothing about it particularly stood out.
"Do you really not know someone named B.B.?"
"There’s no need to worry about B.B.
That client is very normal."
Bang!
"Normal? Say something that makes sense in this city."
"Rebecca, I know you want to look good in front of the rookie, but it’s true. He’s a very kind client."
"Then can you contact him right now?"
"Sorry, but it’s one-way communication for us, so it would be best to just wait for now."
"Just wait?"
"I feel bad for the rookie too, but what can I do? There’s nothing I can do about it."
"You!"
"I’d like to help, but with my current circumstances, I can’t handle that much financial bleeding."
Too many eyes were on me.
Pilar had taken David and Lucy outside,
while Maine and Dorio watched as Kiwi and Rebecca interrogated me.
My behavior lately had been a little strange, sure,
but I never expected a situation like this.
I still needed to keep my head down and lie low.
I couldn’t be found out this early.
I needed at least another month.
"Kangal, don’t you trust us?"
"I do, but I can’t go around blabbing information about my private clients."
"Right, if he’s a private client, there’s nothing we can do about that.
But is that client more important than our trust?"
"Not really, but honestly, it’s a difficult choice.
Whether I should sell out my client as a gift for our rookie."
"Just how dangerous is this bastard named B.B.?"
"He’s not that dangerous, but he’s something of a mystery.
He’s the kind of client who handles business in a slightly troublesome way."
"If he makes things difficult, that means he gives you a hard time."
"Still, I can overlook a little betrayal."
"So you’re saying we should look for Gloria."
"We should look for her. I’m part of the Edgerunners crew too."
My devotion to David as a fan seemed stronger than I had thought.
They say the fan who gets invested first loses.
Did that mean I had no choice but to shorten Gloria’s recuperation period?
I would have to revise the plan from the ground up.
Unlike the original plan, I would move up the start of David and Lucy’s training.
While I was at it, maybe I should prepare better gifts for our crew members too.
