Chapter 53: Sentinel (2)

Sentinel (2)

In the shadowed bowels of the bunker, where the air hummed with the latent Mysteries of superhuman potential woven into the fabric of an unforgiving reality, Warpath's cry shattered the fragile calm, urging all into battle stances as ancient instincts stirred like forgotten incantations.

Kitty and Bishop slipped away, vanishing into the fortified embrace of a steel vault, a sanctuary forged against the encroaching abyss.

"Ha... damn it all, let's hope this is the final curtain,"

Sunspot murmured, his form wreathed in solar flames, prana-like energies drawn from the sun's eternal Mystery coiling around him, ready to unleash a scorching solar wind—a blaze that mocked the boundaries between man and celestial fury.

"We must give our utmost until the end..."

Colossus intoned philosophically, his body transmuting into unyielding steel, a reinforcement of the flesh that echoed the thaumaturgical arts of old, loosening his metallic limbs with deliberate grace amid the encroaching doom.

"Our fate rests with Kitty once more."

Iceman, transforming into crystalline ice—a bounded field of frost against the world's inexorable heat—exhaled chilling vapors, his gaze lingering on his beloved Kitty as she raced toward Bishop, a bitter smile twisting his frozen features like the irony of transient Mysteries.

"Precisely, the Bishop she'll send into the past."

"Not wrong there."

Blink and Warpath rebutted his quip, while Bobby, loath to concede yet bound by the truth's unyielding conceptual weight, nodded reluctantly—a silent acknowledgment in the theater of their recurrent tragedy.

"■■■■—!!!!"

The bunker's doors yielded to a searing heat ray, admitting the colossal three-meter humanoid automaton: Sentinel X-10, the tenth experimental harbinger born of Trask Industries' abhorrent alchemy. A mechanical hunter of the gifted, its sensors attuned to the subtle ripples of Mystery they emanated, designed for extermination under the zealous hatred of Bolivar Trask—the most virulent foe to their kind, architect of weapons that sought to unravel the very tapestries of superhuman enigma.

"Eat this, you abomination!!!!"

Sunspot's colossal surge of solar energy erupted as a tempest of promethium fire, a conceptual blaze enveloping the Sentinel in solar corona's wrath, as if challenging the stars themselves to bow before mortal resolve.

"Freeze and shatter..."

Iceman's glacial outburst cascaded forth, a torrent of cryogenic Mystery freezing another Sentinel in an icy sepulcher, binding its mechanical heresy in crystalline judgment.

"Raaagh!!!!"

Colossus's steel-clad fist thundered against the Sentinel, his momentum building in rhythmic strikes, a blacksmith's forge hammering the foes of humanity—until...

"Blink!!"

"Got it! [Portal]"

Leaping through her conjured gateway, Colossus plummeted from stratospheric heights, a meteor of reinforced inevitability hurtling toward the surface. Another portal yawned just before impact, channeling his velocity into a cataclysmic collision—the Sentinel's frame crumpling under the assault's conceptual weight. Seizing the advantage, Colossus unleashed a barrage of fists without respite.

"Blink, like always—coordinated strike!"

"Yeah, just like always."

Nodding to Warpath's call, Blink's portals whisked him into the fray; twin daggers gripped reverse-style, Warpath danced through spatial rifts with superhuman senses and prowess, carving the Sentinel with merciless precision—a whirlwind of blades defying the barriers of reality.

"■■■........"

Yet, the Sentinels surpassed their direst imaginings, these paragons of mechanical Mystery. Why else would they eternally flee through time's treacherous currents, evading these inexorable hunters?

"Damn it!! Why won't it melt?! What metal endures the sun's blaze?!!"

Sunspot barraged it with prominences and flares, escalating his solar invocation until the concrete and steel around him yielded to molten ruin—yet the Sentinel advanced unscathed, merely singed, now countering with an icy aura born of adaptive conceptual thievery!

"What the hell!! Son of a—!!"

His curses echoed as he poured hyperthermal fury, but the Sentinel, having mimicked Iceman's chill and networked it across its kin, began nullifying Sunspot's blaze, steadily overcoming his might.

"Just die already!!!"

His plea fell on deaf circuits; the Sentinel, cloaked in frost, closed in swiftly, throttling him, cooling his solar essence, reversing the tide to encase him in glacial defeat.

"Guh... ck... d-damn... bi—..."

Clang!!

His final epithet faded into utter congelation; the Sentinel hurled the frozen form to the ground, shattering it into crystalline oblivion.

"Damn... this should've pierced to the core by now..."

Iceman, relentlessly exhaling frost to pulverize the Sentinel from within, grew uneasy at the absence of yielding fragility. His dread materialized—the machine replicated Sunspot's heat, melting its icy bonds and countering with scorching advance, intent on liquefying him in turn.

"Crap! Crap!!... Guh!!"

Retreating hastily, erecting icy barriers in a desperate warding, his efforts vaporized before the Sentinel's inherited inferno. Even as he drove his form to absolute zero, the encroaching heat outpaced, melting him from the inside out.

"Kit... ty..."

Whispering her name in his dying breath, Iceman dissolved into a puddle that soon evaporated into nothingness—a Mystery extinguished.

"You bastard! You're too damn tough... my steel punches hurt! No way—is this adamantium?! Ha... who knew I'd miss Logan..."

Colossus pummeled relentlessly, marveling and despairing at the unmarred durability save for the stratospheric scar; the Sentinel, wearied of play, intercepted his fist with childlike ease, twisting and suppressing him before transmuting its own form to surpass his steel—replication perfected.

"Monstrous wretch..."

Thwack!!!

Without retort, the Sentinel wrenched Colossus's arm free, severing it in mechanical silence.

"Aaaargh!!! Damn it!! You filthy—..."

Crunch!! Splatter!

His screams and curses drowned as the Sentinel's foot crushed his face, compressing his skull like crushed foil—Colossus fell cold, another fallen star in this eternal cycle.

"Blink!! No... no!! Snap out of it!!!"

A momentary lapse, and Blink failed to portal away; her abdomen pierced by a Sentinel's fist, she perished. Warpath, her lover, yearned to cradle her cooling corpse, but survival demanded action—now facing four converged Sentinels alone.

Yet retreat was denied; further flight imperiled Kitty and Bishop's temporal gambit behind him. This loop repeated ad infinitum, an inescapable fate's cruel jest—escape forever elusive.

"Curse you, Trask... I'll end you yet."

Envisioning the Agency's rescue and twisting Trask's neck, Warpath gripped his reverse-held daggers tighter.

However...

Whirr... KABOOOM!!!!!!

The four Sentinels' heat rays incinerated him to ash, a prayer unanswered.

"Please... Bishop... hurry..."

Kitty—Shadowcat—gazed anxiously at the unresponsive Bishop, inwardly pleading for the temporal reversal that would erase this nightmare. By now, regression should have triggered, nullifying deaths in time's reversal—yet he stirred not.

Crackle... BOOM!!!!!

Her silent invocation shattered as Bishop's body detonated, splattering her in gore. Despair claimed her—the pastward voyage had failed, leaving no sanctuary.

And as compounding calamity, the Sentinels melted the vault's door, advancing. Kitty stared into the void with lifeless eyes.

As their faces split to unleash rays...

"Truly disappointing..."

BANG!!!!!

A thunderous roar heralded a Sentinel's evisceration—two-thirds rent away, reduced to inert scrap. The indomitable frame, defiant to solar blaze and steel might, was shredded like chaff in the wind of a greater Mystery.

"Ah... Minister!!!!"

"Sorry, Kitty. Not too late, I hope?"

"Way too late, you damn Minister..."

Tears streamed, yet she smiled through grief. Even if all perished, his survival heralded hope—for he was the enigma among enigmas, an unnamed superhuman of boundless gifts, nigh-divine in scope, tallying them futile.

Zod.05. Their joker in this cosmic farce.

For in any dire tableau, he could invert reality itself—the ultimate cheat code against despair's gilded chains.
