Chapter 9: He Traverses the Other Side

During Warp travel, we arrived at a single problem. We lacked enough psykers to maintain the Gellar Field.

Gellar Field.

An indispensable element for humanity to navigate the Warp—a kind of veil that prevented Warp entities from invading a vessel.

It was a device that required psykers, for the field was generated from the minds of psykers placed in a coma within the Gellar Field Generator.

Yet for some "unknown reason," every psyker placed into the device to generate the Gellar Field failed to last even a few hours before being ground apart by the Warp.

"Once we emerge into realspace, we will have to bring aboard a psychic choir."

"But we do not know how long it will take to reach realspace."

Faced with this new obstacle, everyone began wracking their brains for a solution. But I had one method.

"Why not have me enter the Gellar Field Generator? I am a psyker too, so I should be able to generate a Gellar Field."

"Are you serious?"

The Magos asked me.

"Of course I am."

"Very well. Let us run the calculations. Follow me."

I followed the Magos out of the bridge, where everyone had gathered. My sister tried to stop me.

"No, wait!!! What are you saying?!!"

"Erin, calm down."

"Tess!"

Tess spoke as he forcibly restrained Erin, who was working herself into a frenzy.

"This is his choice. What is the spirit of our House, Erin?"

"Patience, cooperation, and solitude..."

"Yes. So endure what you feel now, and cooperate with his decision. Then we shall begin the solitude of losing a brother. And we will endure that solitude once more. In doing so, an opportunity for new cooperation will arise."

"Hah... You did not just force that in, did you? Well, never mind. I made a spectacle of myself. I should at least apologize later."

When he wakes up, that is.

Erin regained her composure after Tess's advice and left to do what she needed to do. Tess, who had watched her retreating figure, also departed to attend to his own duties with a pleased expression—his eyes moist with tears at his sister's growth.

And Jerrie, who had witnessed the scene from beside them, would later offer this assessment.

"It was a tearful story. Laugh."

------

The Magos and I arrived at the chamber containing the Gellar Field Generator.

"As you know, once you enter the device, it will place you in a kind of coma. Until the device is powered down... until we emerge into realspace, you will remain asleep."

"I know."

"And as you know, we cannot determine the device's current condition. You too may be reduced to ashes in just a few hours."

Even at this very moment, psykers within the device were crying out in agony as though suffering nightmares.

"Do not worry. I am Yiseol, the greatest psyker there is."

"Then... we shall dispense with the procedure. Go on, enter that hibernation pod."

A glass capsule exhaled cold air. I lay down comfortably within it.

"It may be an instant for me, or it may not be. Sleep well."

"...Sleep well, then."

With those words, the mechanisms inside the glass capsule activated, and my consciousness cut out.

------

The Magos watched Yiseol, who had fallen into a coma within the glass capsule, then checked the nearby display panel.

"Condition stable. Gellar Field recovery rate: 50%, 60%... 98%. As expected, remarkable. Servitor 6-2, connect to the shipwide vox network."

-Connection established.

"Ahem. I am Carmilla, Magos Explorer and chief authority of the vessel, the Gear of the Machine. The Gellar Field has been fully restored. All crew are to cease their prayers and return to their assigned duties."

-Connection terminated.

The Magos turned her head back toward the Gellar Field Generator.

The psykers who had, until moments ago, worn agonized expressions as though plagued by nightmares were gone. In their place were psykers smiling peacefully, as if embraced by their parents.

"No. Some may not have parents, so it must be the embrace of the Omnissiah—the Emperor."
