Chapter 15: Not a Worthy Foe, Nor Even a Strong One

We pursued the daemons while keeping several hundred meters between us. After following them for a long while, a broad avenue appeared, just as expected.

"Well, they would need to secure a large road to move an entire daemon horde at once."

"I cannot see anything."

Not even the daemons we had been following.

Boom!!!

Erin swung her arm and struck the nearby collapsed buildings.

"Kieeeek!!!!"

At the impact, hordes of Khorne daemons began pouring out from every direction like a swarm of bees bursting forth from the ruined buildings.

"So it was a trap after all."

"But what do they intend to accomplish with such insignificant vermin?"

Tess asked as he swept aside the daemons attacking them as though he were sweeping a yard.

"It is a double trap, most likely."

Clang!!!

Erin used her shield to block Bloodcrushers, Khorne's elite troops, as they came flying at her by leaping from the collapsed buildings.

"Daemons that employ tactics... This is becoming troublesome, is it not?"

Rat-a-tat-tat-tat!!!

Purging the daemons beneath a hail of gunfire, we continued along the avenue.

If we let our guard down and were swept up in the endlessly pouring tide of daemons, we would be finished without being able to do a thing. We did our utmost not to reveal an opening.

"...Theo! Erin!"

As the tide of daemons subsided, Tess appeared to spot something and sent us the coordinates. When we looked in that direction, there were two enormous daemons there.

Two Bloodthirsters.

Khorne's fists—the Great Daemons known as Bloodthirsters—were the most formidable among Khorne's daemons, incarnations of fiery rage and slaughter.

For that reason, only a very few could stand against them. Bringing down even one required accepting tremendous sacrifices.

And yet there were two such Great Daemons before us? This was utterly...

"Interesting. Erin! The one on the right is yours!"

"Yes!"

"I will keep the other rabble from interfering."

I fired my cannon at the left of the two Bloodthirsters charging toward us.

Clang!!

True to a warrior of Khorne, the daemon braced its axe in both hands and received the shell head-on as it continued advancing.

I fired shell after shell as I charged toward it, and the instant I judged that I had reached sufficient range, I unleashed my psychic power.

"{Be purified!}"

"Kraaagh!!!"

At the same time, I drew my dimensional-folding blade and swept gracefully past the Great Daemon's side.

Swish!!

One exchange. One second.

That was both the time it took for the Great Daemon to be banished into the Warp and the extent of its achievement.

Having felled the Great Daemon, I immediately turned to the side...

Crunch!!

I saw Erin driving the daemon down into the ground with her spearhead piercing its shoulder, mercilessly unloading her bolt cannon into its face.

Unable to withstand the assault, the Great Daemon was ultimately banished into the Warp.

"That was rather anticlimactic. It suddenly stopped while charging at me. Still, if you had not been there, the damage would have been severe."

"Yes, and after seeing the two Great Daemons die in an instant, the daemon host has begun to withdraw. We can pick up the pace now."

The daemons' hesitation would eventually come to an end. That was why we began rapidly crossing the open avenue.

"...Lion's Gate is finally coming into view."

The silhouette of a colossal gate was beginning to emerge faintly in the distance. It was undoubtedly Lion's Gate.

"Whew, there are mountains of daemons gathering there."

"Good. We will catch our breath here, then charge. If we can somehow deal with the Great Daemons, that should be the end of it."

"Hoo... haa..."

"Then let us move out."

We would finish this swiftly.
