Chapter 20: Part 3 "Cambridge"

About a day after leaving Darlington.

After pretending the human hunger I naturally felt was just a longing for this taste and getting by on fish-shaped pastries, and after sleeping a comfortable? ten hours with Holstein’s nonsense as my lullaby...

"Puhihing. I see it! Holstein’s eyes have spotted it!!"

"Oh, are we there already? Miss! Wake up!! We’ll be arriving soon!!"

"Mm, mm... yes....!!"

Holstein spotted it first, and as soon as Capris saw the shape of the city, he immediately woke Ainsel.

Before long, the city that came into view was built around the massive River Cam, which even connected partway to the river of the fairy stronghold, along with the absurdly large bridges spanning it and the houses and alleyways gathered around them.

The name itself, a bridge over the River Cam, described the city perfectly.

"All right, all right. Then let’s get the inspection ready first. Let’s finish quickly, go in, and get ready to do business, shall we?"

"Y-yes."

"Puhihing. Please give me lots of fish-shaped pastries as payment for my hard work."

And after a great deal of trouble, they went through the various official documents and permits, the business certificate, the search of the wagon, and a brief dismantling of the crossbow.

"Oh dear, this is only a little, but please....."

"Hm? Hahaha, what a tasty little thing.... Ah, you may pass!"

"Haha, then please excuse us-"

And finally, if you gave the guard a small token of sincerity in the form of fish-shaped pastries, you could at last enter Cambridge.

The lord here was Sainsbury of the Wind clan... but for now, that was not something they needed to know. There was no way the lord would personally come out just for a single fish-shaped pastry, and the business permit had already been taken care of long ago. Ah, this kind of thing really was convenient.

Then, for now, it was free time.

To begin with, they had run out of fish-shaped pastry ingredients, so they needed to buy more here anyway. And since they might as well do some sightseeing, they decided to take their time and enjoy the city.

The meeting was set for around 6 p.m. The place was that large bridge. That was when Holstein would return with the wagon, and business would start tomorrow.

Now then...

"Would you show me what’s good around here?"

"Of course, customer. Hoho, please come this way first....."

First, shopping.....!! Business was going so well that they had money to spare!! Ghehe, let’s see if there are any good crafts or antiques around here.....?

"Oh, this is....."

"Oh! Excellent eye! That’s a drifting relic from the era before the Human Order! I got it at quite a high price myself, so it’ll be a bit expensive, but....."

"Hmm.... Then I’ll look at the other items first and decide."

"Mm-hm, I see. Then this one is......"

The general store they entered was a jackpot among jackpots. Whether the owner had a bit of that sort of temperament or not, an enormous number of goods were neatly arranged and displayed.

The prime example was the drifting relics. If they were even setting aside a separate section to sell things that were normally hard to see, that said enough.

"Oh..... Do you have quite a few of these?"

"Ah, yes. Those come in quite a lot, so we have a fair amount in stock. They’re pretty cheap! ......Though I’m not really sure what they’re used for."

"Hmm.... Then I’ll buy one of these for now. The one with the string."

"Yes, yes.... Thank you very much.....!"

As soon as he left the general store, he hung the item around his neck. A piece of jewelry with a cross attached to it. Well, he wasn’t sure whether it was really jewelry or something more like a rosary that people treated with a bit more reverence, but it gave him a strange sense of reassurance.

Even if he didn’t believe in the one above the heavens, he had received a great deal of grace from them, after all..... It was kind of like a charm.

"All right, then now....."

......Good grief, the world, time had already gone by this much?

He was sure it had only been around 8 o’clock when he went in, but now it was already 2 o’clock. Seriously.

"Tsk, there are only about four hours left, so I should hurry to a place that sells ingredients and buy some ingredien....."

"Move!! Don’t block the road!!"

"A great person is coming!! Hurry, hurry, we have to go see!"

"The one we may only see once in our lives!!"

"The one who will meet with Lord Sainsbury!!"

"The famous one herself~ Lady Aurora, head of the Wind clan!!!"

Before he could even finish speaking, he was swept up in a crowd surging in from somewhere. Damn it, Aurora? Did they say Aurora just now?

She was the head of the Wind clan, and the highest grade of those hateful bastards you absolutely did not want to get involved with. And yet she managed her image well, so her reputation was high not only in Salisbury but elsewhere too.

.......Honestly, I was a little, just a little curious, but...

"...No, right. Let’s not go. The way to survive was to stay completely away from disaster like that in the first place.....!!"

So let’s hurry up and buy the ingredients, and then stay far away from wherever that woman was passing through. Then there’d be no chance of getting tangled up with her! Hah! See? Nothing to it!

.......But why do I suddenly feel uneasy? It’s just my imagination, right? Right?
