"Damn, je--"
Before I could even finish speaking, the Mors that seemed to have already woken from their sleep began to squirm and move.
Then, especially on the larger ones, the shape of an arm rippled into existence, and they swung those arms down.
Boom—!!
"Puhihihihing!!! That was close, heehing!!! If it hadn’t been for me, who transcends the world, we’d have been in serious trouble!!"
"Damn it?! Miss, please, I’m begging you!!!"
"Uwaaaah.....!!! One second from now, right! Then immediately turn toward two o’clock, then three seconds later, left! And then......"
But just before that, the fairy mare hurriedly turned the carriage, slipping out of the arm’s striking range by the barest margin. At the same time, Ainsel began calling out her predictions.
"Heeheeheehing!!! Isn’t this a little too intense?!"
"If you transcend the world, shouldn’t you be able to handle that much?!!"
"Of course!! I, who transcend the world, can do it with ease!! It’s only possible because it’s me!!!"
......What the hell is this thing even saying?
Still, I couldn’t deny that she was good at it.
She was actually listening to the lady’s nonstop predictions and moving decisively and quickly enough to dodge them.
No matter how the Mors swung those giant arms, no matter how hard they tried to make contact, she responded instantly to every instruction and somehow escaped.
When an arm swung, she moved out of range. When they surged in like a wave, she accelerated hard and endured it with the Fang clan’s naturally sturdy body.
"Three seconds ahead! Two! One! Now!! Turn left!! Stop immediately!! Boss, the heated iron plate up to the upper right!!"
"Heeheeheehing!!! I have realized it. With these instructions added, I have transcended the limits of my race!!!"
"Yes, yes. Got it!"
And besides, this carriage wasn’t just any carriage.
It was the original food cart, modified for this day so it would have enough safety measures to withstand the Mors.
Since it still had to function as a food cart, it also contained all sorts of heating equipment and cooking tools.
And of course, it could use a heated iron plate like this without any problem.
Clang!
"■■■■■?!!!"
"Hyah-ha! The Mors are trash!!! What kind of body is that, and you don’t even have any sense of balance!!!!!"
As the fairy mare’s movement caused the food cart to tilt, the Mors outside were struck by the iron plate jutting out from the carriage.
But this is cutting it awfully close for me too... I’m going to get thrown out of the carriage at this rate.......
Ah, damn it, there goes the iron plate. It’s soaked with Mors fluid now, so I can only use it for self-defense.
With this alone, I could cook all kinds of iron-plate dishes...... Tch, no help for it. Fish-shaped pastries are the trend right now anyway.
"Next!! Three seconds left!! And then two to the right..... no, no, straight ahead! Just go straight!!!"
"Puhihihihing?!!"
But then, while things were going smoothly, the prediction suddenly got tangled up.
Fortunately, the fairy mare understood it perfectly and, instead of continuing left, she sharply corrected course and kept going straight.
When choosing one route out of countless possible futures, misreads are only natural sometimes. I can understand that. Honestly, I should be grateful to the lady just for being able to get through this situation at all.
But the problem was......
"Ah......?"
"Huh? Boss?!"
"Puhihihihing?!"
Because I was sticking my upper body out while holding the iron plate, if the carriage turned this suddenly, I’d get thrown right out of it.
"Kagh, keh, kuh?!!"
I was flung outside together with the iron plate and rolled across the ground.
Fortunately, I didn’t land on the heated plate and get roasted alive on it, but......
"....Damn it, my life....!!"
Of all things, I’d ended up surrounded by the Mors.
No, they had already swollen to the point of covering the plain, so I guess this was only natural......!!!
"Haa... hoo......"
I forced my trembling legs to stand and grabbed the iron plate in my hand. I could still hear the carriage moving not too far away. Maybe it was coming back to pick me up.
And I’m human, after all. So if I make contact with those things, I’ll be fine as long as I don’t get hit by an arm. Leaving aside that excuse for later, the most dangerous thing is.....
"......Damn it, maybe it’s a good thing all their attention is up front."
Getting swept away by that incoming tide of Mors.....!!
Just standing still would get me swallowed by that sheer mass, swept away and carried off somewhere, the calamity of the queen’s knights, or so I’d heard.....!!
So first, I planted the heated iron plate into the ground.
The plate wasn’t very thick, but it was still hot enough to burn me if I touched it wrong, and the Mors had those squirming, formless bodies.
If I was lucky, I might not get swept away and could somehow ride out the wave of that mass. I might even be able to hold out until the carriage came back.
So first, I took a stance so that at least my vital points wouldn’t be directly exposed to the heated iron plate. Keep my center of gravity steady. Luckily, the carriage had drawn their aggro, and none of them were turning back toward me.
"Hoo...... Here it comes."
And then the wave of Mors began to surge in.
Fortunately, they didn’t even glance at me and moved only in the direction of the carriage’s sound, as if that were their only target.
Advancing, only advancing. Was there some instinct in them as living things? Were they, unlike me, a fake fairy, charging at the real thing? Or was there some other reason?
I didn’t know. I had no way of knowing. No, I didn’t even have the luxury of thinking about it deeply,
"because there isn’t any, damn it.....!!!"
The Mors rushing toward the iron plate split neatly to either side the moment they touched it and kept going straight. But the problem was their weight.
I’d thought they’d be light because they were formless, but damn it, why were they so heavy....!!! If I hadn’t planted the plate so firmly, I would’ve been thrown off immediately!!
"Damn it......!! Why is my life like thissssss!!!!"
Can a human cut through a tidal wave?
Can a human erase a storm?
Can an individual stop destruction alone?
No, impossible. This was a disaster.
The wrath of nature. A punishment from heaven.
Something with no way to oppose it, only endure it and pray not to be swept away.
That was the Mors. In tragic words, the traces of calamity. Things that had lost their meaning.
"Huuuuuuuuup.......!!!"
But so what?
I wasn’t fighting a catastrophe. I was just enduring.
Even if my hands burned from the heated iron plate,
even if my legs were buried into the ground by overwhelming mass,
the only thing I could do was hold on with hope.
"Bo.... over he....re!!"
"Puh... hing... com...."
And after enduring like that for several minutes,
I heard voices from behind me.
The lady’s voice and that weird-headed fairy mare’s voice. And the sound of the carriage rolling in.
They were here. It was done. I’d survived this.....!!
In a few seconds, that fairy mare, following the lady’s prediction, would skillfully haul me back onto the carriage, and then I’d at least get out of this situation!!
"Haah... haah.... I’m sa....."
"Boss!!! Lower yourself, quick!!!! Hurry!!!!!"
"Heeheeheehing!!!! Your back!! Watch your back!!!! My lord!!!"
But just as I let out a sigh of relief, an ominous shout stabbed into my ears.
And then
"Ghk?!!!"
From behind me, I was swept up in the Mors wave with a heavy impact.
What, why? Even if they were faster at returning to the carriage, surely I’d be the one they should be aiming for, no, wait.....?
"Boss?!!!!"
"Puhihihihing?!!!"
I heard the lady and the fairy mare scream from behind me.
But the Mors paid them no mind. No, as if their interest had shifted away from the carriage, they turned back like a massive current, passed beyond where they had originally been gathered, and headed somewhere else.
"Kagh, kkehk, keog.....!!"
And I was buried in the middle of it.
A squirming, formless wave. My consciousness grew dim as I felt like I couldn’t even breathe properly, and then my eyes closed.
