Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Summoning a VDV Squad

First floor of the ammunition depot.

"Damn it. That bastard Black Rabbit played us."

"The main gate is sealed off. Our only option is to head down and evacuate through the tunnel."

Of the original fifteen-man squad, only five remained.

Captain Rem, Frost, and three of the captain’s men.

After entering the ammunition depot, the plan had been for Black Rabbit to lure everyone on this floor away, then leave through the exit at the top of the hill.

The entire ammunition depot had been built into the mountainside, but there was only one level aboveground.

Above it stood a bunker with an exit leading outside.

Black Rabbit’s mission had been to draw everyone on the first floor up into that bunker, then escape through the exit and lead the enemy into the woods.

But no one had expected the enemies he had lured away to come back.

There was only one explanation: Black Rabbit had not kept their attention. He had simply run into the woods and abandoned them.

"That bastard rabbit. If I get out of here, I’ll kill him myself."

The group was pinned behind a sandbag barricade by NPC fire. They were in a corridor, and that wall of sandbags was their only cover.

At the far end of the corridor was the garage through which they had entered.

But the exit was now completely blocked by NPCs. Nine of Rem’s squad members had gone down there while covering their captain.

The NPCs were using their rifles to keep the sandbag position suppressed.

"Our only way out now is to keep moving down."

Even Frost’s normally expressionless face showed a trace of panic.

"Let’s go. Down is our only option."

"You take point. We’ll follow."

Captain Rem spoke to the three remaining men behind him.

One man took the lead. Rem followed second, then Frost, while the other two brought up the rear.

Using the minimap, Adrian could clearly see that nine blue dots had disappeared, while another had already fled into the distant woods.

"What the hell happened? Did their operation go sideways?"

"Forget it."

Adrian had been about to leave, but an inexplicable weight settled in his chest.

"You’re the protagonist who got transported here. How can you even think like that?"

That was right. Adrian thought of Frost.

The short-haired girl had looked after him ever since he joined the squad.

He looked at the battered tactical watch on his wrist, then at his own gear.

Adrian hesitated. Should he go save them?

They had only known each other for a few hours. Was it really worth it?

"Adrian, how can you think that way? She’s gorgeous, she helped you, and you’re just going to leave her behind and run?"

"Besides, it’s not like this will be difficult. I can treat it as combat practice. It’s not like I’ll die."

Adrian immediately found an open patch of ground.

"System, summon a Mercenary Squad."

[Please select a deployment location.]

Adrian’s view shifted to the map, and he selected the open ground in front of him.

[VDV Squad entering the battlefield.]

As the System notification ended, Adrian faintly heard the roar of an aircraft engine.

The trees began to sway.

At first it was only a breeze, but the wind rapidly intensified.

Then a shadow fell over Adrian’s head.

It was a Mi-17.

As a transport helicopter, the Mi-17 could carry up to thirty fully equipped soldiers at once.

The massive aircraft hovered fifteen meters above the ground.

The cabin door opened, and a rope was thrown down.

Then twelve fully armed squad members fast-roped down it.

[Combat personnel deployed.]

As the System notification sounded, the twelve men did not form up. Instead, they used the nearby trees for cover and established security.

The rope was not reeled back in; it was simply dropped to the ground.

Then the Mi-17 slowly climbed and disappeared from sight.

"Damn..."

Honestly, Adrian thought the whole scene was badass.

The entire fast-rope insertion had taken less than twenty seconds. He had assumed the Mi-17 would land in the clearing and the twelve-man squad would walk out of it.

"No way. An entrance this cool needs an audience next time."

Adrian made up his mind, then spoke to one of the squad members beside him.

"Who’s your squad leader?"

"Captain, did you lose your memory?"

A gruff voice answered him.

Just as Adrian was at a loss for words, detailed information about the squad appeared before him.

[You have become the squad’s captain. Points earned by squad members for killing NPCs will belong to you.]

[Make good use of these soldiers’ abilities. Good luck, Commander.]

"Awkward. So I’m the captain of this squad."

Adrian opened the map and began assigning combat roles.

In his previous life, the games Adrian played had always provided mission prompts for him to complete one by one.

This was his first time actually planning a mission himself.

Still, anyone who enjoyed shooters usually knew a thing or two about military matters.

"Whatever. They can respawn if they die, so we’ll do it this way."

Remembering that he was a man with three lives, Adrian’s courage surged at once.

"Our mission this time is to enter the ammunition depot and rescue our allies."

"The sniper and one rifleman will establish a sniper position here."

The System map’s view was shared throughout the squad, like a holographic projection.

Adrian pointed to a hill opposite the ammunition depot.

"Set up the general-purpose machine gun to the right of the sniper position. Once the mission is complete, we’ll withdraw through the main gate. You’ll eliminate any pursuers coming after us."

The general-purpose machine gunner carried a Russian PKM general-purpose machine gun.

It fired 7.62×54mmR full-power rounds and had an effective range of up to one thousand meters.

It might not have seemed especially powerful in games, but in reality, a general-purpose machine gun was terrifying.

It had the range of a sniper rifle and could fire automatically. More importantly, it had an incredible suppressive effect against infantry.

The sniper carried a Dragunov designated marksman rifle. Its standard 4x optic was well suited for medium-range engagements.

It also used 7.62×54mmR full-power ammunition, allowing it to precisely engage high-threat enemy targets.

As for assigning them riflemen, Adrian had read in a military magazine that sniper and machine-gun positions needed dedicated security personnel.

"The rest of you will form an assault team and come inside with me to rescue them."

Adrian then arranged the formation according to something he had seen on a military website.

Two riflemen would take point, followed by two machine gunners.

The machine gunners carried RPK light machine guns. Their range was inferior to the PKM’s, but they were much lighter and better suited to indoor combat.

The two riflemen carried the same AK-74s as Adrian.

Everyone else was armed with AK-74 rifles as well.

The difference was that the medic carried a defibrillator and twenty bandages.

According to the System description, a medic could revive downed allies.

Yes, revive them.

According to the System’s judgment, as long as someone was considered Adrian’s ally, the medic could get them back on their feet.

And any injury could be healed with a bandage.

Even if an entire leg had been shot off, using a bandage would make it grow back.

"This is ridiculous. Everyone else is in a real battlefield, while I’m playing a game."

Adrian complained silently.

This was an indoor operation, so the anti-vehicle specialist would not be much use. Adrian assigned him to the rear.

As for the combat engineer and the other rifleman, their main task was to protect the medic.

As long as the medic survived, the entire squad could be brought back up and return to the fight.
