Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The Battle Begins

"Holy shit, he just ran straight out there?"

Black Rabbit cried out, but the burly man clamped a hand firmly over his mouth.

"Are you trying to get us killed? Make another sound and I’ll put you down right here."

Faced with the gun barrel in front of him, Black Rabbit did not dare make another peep and backed away.

Frost had witnessed it all. She was growing increasingly curious about the young man before her.

"A student who hasn’t even graduated yet dares to enter the Battlefield World—and takes on the incredibly dangerous role of a rabbit. Interesting."

The patch of grass where they were hiding was less than a hundred meters from the sentries, and Adrian’s clothes were especially conspicuous.

His blue-and-white school uniform stood out easily amid the grass.

"Never mind the kid’s combat experience. Plenty of people here don’t have courage like that."

Captain Rem admired Adrian’s courage.

The first time most people entered the Battlefield World, they found a corner or a patch of grass to hide in. Anyone who did not cry in fear or start screaming was already considered impressive.

Who had Adrian’s nerve?

"Captain Rem, this kid is going to get us killed," Black Rabbit whispered despite having been forced back.

"I know."

Rem chambered his AK-47 and aimed it at Adrian in the distance.

"If that kid runs back toward us and exposes our position, I’ll shoot him myself."

Gulp.

Black Rabbit swallowed hard.

He had heard that Rem was a ruthless captain, but he had not expected him to be this cold-blooded.

No. He could not stay with this bunch of lunatics any longer. He needed to find a way out.

Black Rabbit’s assignment was to lure everyone on the first level away, then escape from the hilltop.

The firing port was on the north side of the ammunition depot. For the others to enter the depot, the garage door on the south side was their only route.

Black Rabbit’s job was to enter through the depot entrance, then draw everyone on the first level up to the hilltop.

The hilltop was covered in woods. Once he got out of the exit, he only needed to run fifty meters to disappear into the trees. Then, after the team finished scavenging, they would come to the woods and deal with the enemy.

"I can’t trust someone like Rem. If he abandons me and pulls out, won’t I be left here to die?"

Black Rabbit’s gaze changed, becoming even more vicious.

"I need a plan."

Adrian sprinted forward, his eyes fixed on the awareness bars above the guards’ heads.

"It’s turning yellow."

The next second, Adrian dropped flat to the ground and concealed himself behind a clump of grass.

Through a gap in the grass, Adrian watched the bars above the two NPCs gradually turn white.

"Having a System really is convenient."

Adrian silently gave the System another thumbs-up.

But if he kept this up, he would have no way to break away and summon the squad.

Then Adrian recalled a level from a game he had played in his previous life. It had featured a similar situation.

The protagonist had gone behind some brush and rustled it to draw a guard’s attention.

Using the minimap, Adrian noticed a large patch of grass to his right, with a dense forest beyond it.

"I’ve got it."

Then, to everyone’s utter astonishment, Adrian suddenly stood up and waved from where he was.

"That kid has a death wish."

"He’s got guts, I’ll give him that."

At the same time, Captain Rem’s rifle was trained on the back of Adrian’s head.

Of course, Adrian was not trying to get himself killed. He had been watching carefully.

When he had run over earlier, the enemies’ detection bars had gradually turned red.

That meant there was a threshold.

As long as he remained within that range, the enemy would not attack him.

That was how Adrian had come up with this plan.

He would stand up and wave. Once the NPCs’ detection bars reached yellow, he would sprint toward the brush.

That would lead the NPCs into the forest.

Whenever the bars began to drop, Adrian would stand and wave again, luring the NPCs farther in his direction.

"What kind of move is that? You can do that? The guy’s insane."

"I don’t think he came here to make money. I think he came here to kill himself."

The squad members all thought Adrian was committing suicide, but Rem lowered the AK he had been aiming.

"Kid’s pretty smart."

A rookie with that kind of nerve and adaptability made Rem want to recruit him.

Before long, the two guards spotted Adrian and started walking toward the brush.

Adrian remained hidden in the grass. Whenever the guards’ detection bars started dropping, he stood and waved.

To the others, the entire scene was completely incomprehensible.

In the end, he successfully lured the two guards into the forest.

"Move out."

Once the guards had left, Captain Rem gave the order.

Checking the minimap, Adrian saw that the blue dots had entered the ammunition depot’s main gate. That proved he had completed his mission.

"The people getting in my way are gone. Time for my turn."

Adrian stopped drawing the enemies’ attention and hid behind the grass until the NPCs’ detection bars had completely turned white and the two men returned to the gate.

"Open inventory."

A military backpack lay quietly inside. Adrian opened it with a thought.

[AK-74, equipped with a side rail and a 1P78 Kashtan 2.8x optic; six standard 30-round 5.45mm magazines.]

[Russian Level 3 body armor, jungle camouflage pattern.]

PS: The exact equipment models will not be specified in detail in the text; refer to relevant games for reference.

[Russian multipurpose chest rig, capable of carrying eight magazines.]

[Russian Level 3 tactical helmet, equipped with a radio communications headset.]

[20-liter tactical backpack.]

The familiar equipment reminded Adrian of a game from his previous life, though there were many differences from the game as well.

For instance, backpacks here were not calculated by grid slots, but by capacity.

In other words, even if he carried something out in his hands, it still counted as supplies he had brought back.

After putting on the gear, Adrian could not help feeling that he looked ridiculous.

A blue-and-white school uniform paired with camouflage body armor and a tactical helmet.

"Don’t I look like an armed high school student?"

"Just not a schoolgirl, that’s all."

When Adrian picked up the AK-74 from the ground, an ammunition count appeared in the lower-right corner of his vision.

30

He could not afford to develop a compulsive reloading habit here. If he changed magazines before emptying one, the remaining rounds would not magically transfer into the new magazine.

Five magazines sat neatly in the chest rig over Adrian’s torso.

Clack.

He pulled the bolt back partway and saw a gleaming brass cartridge already chambered, ready to fire at any moment.

At the same time, a flood of shooting experience poured into Adrian’s mind.

Shouldering the rifle and taking aim came naturally in one smooth motion.

Combined with the System-assisted crosshair and the 2.8x optic, Adrian could now handle the firearm with complete proficiency.

"All right. My mercenary life in another world starts now."

Adrian was thrilled. He would never have had the chance to experience something like this in his previous world.

He could barely put down the rifle in his hands. What man could resist something like this?

Rat-tat-tat!

Bzzzz—

"What’s going on?"

Adrian jolted and dropped prone on the spot.

He opened the map to check it.
