Chapter 19: Chapter 19: VDV Airport Raid

A series of weapons being charged echoed through the area as everyone took up positions and watched the perimeter.

Selene Winter raised her rifle as well, scanning the surroundings.

"Relax. My squad is here."

Seeing how tense everyone was, Adrian explained.

He had finished putting on his equipment by then.

An old-style camouflage uniform, Russian Level 4 heavy armor, a multirail tactical helmet, and electronic hearing protection.

To the others, Adrian's gear looked almost futuristic—clearly from an entirely different league than their own equipment.

"Lower your weapons."

At Adrian's words, Selene gave the order.

Everyone lowered their muzzles, though they remained in a ready stance, alert to every direction.

Seeing that they were still so guarded, Adrian shook his head helplessly.

"My squad is in another city. There wasn't enough time for them to drive here, so they had to come by helicopter."

As he spoke, Adrian walked toward an open patch of ground.

Outside anyone else's field of vision, an enormous blue marker was appearing there.

It was the ability Adrian had activated.

[VDV Air Assault Support Deployment]

A System notification sounded in Adrian's ear.

Then, before everyone's stunned eyes, a Mi-17 helicopter slowly came into view.

"A helicopter! That's a helicopter!"

In this world, ordinary vehicles and passenger aircraft could be manufactured.

But military vehicles could only be acquired through the Battlefield Worlds.

Such as armored vehicles, tanks, and helicopters.

Every nation had tried modifying light troop carriers as well, but the rules of this world had caused every attempt to fail.

Having ruled out every other impossibility, there was only one explanation for the helicopter before them.

"Adrian got it from an instance."

The instant that thought arose, cold sweat broke out on the backs of all thirteen people present.

Instances that could yield large vehicles were extraordinarily difficult.

Either one had to capture an NPC arms factory, or seize a major ammunition depot.

The NPC forces in such maps numbered more than a thousand. Clearing one required the manpower of an entire city.

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh.

The Mi-17 moved into the air above and behind Adrian.

Several ropes were thrown from both sides of the cabin door.

While everyone was still reeling from the sight of the massive helicopter, three soldiers had already fast-roped to the ground.

Every member of Adrian's squad wore standard Russian Level 6 heavy armor.

The helmets of those body armor sets came equipped with face shields.

Moreover, the squad Adrian had summoned wore modern Russian camouflage.

The contrast with the traditional camouflage issued here could not have been more pronounced.

Adrian's twelve-man squad had landed and formed up behind him.

After completing the fast-rope insertion, the helicopter dipped its nose and rapidly departed the military camp.

"My squad is here. Let's move out."

Other than Selene, who had at least been somewhat prepared, the remaining twelve special forces personnel stood frozen in place.

"Is... is this the gap between us and an elite unit?"

The arrival of Adrian's squad completely dispelled the resentment the others had been nursing.

In its place came a profound sense of helplessness—and envy.

The VDV were an elite Russian force.

Every one of them stood over six feet three, especially the general-purpose machine gunner.

To carry more ammunition and operate the PKM light machine gun, the machine gunner had the largest build in the squad.

Standing nearly six foot seven in Russian heavy armor, he was an intimidating sight.

This time, none of the special forces personnel dared reach out and touch the equipment. The sheer presence of Adrian's squad had intimidated them.

"All right, I'll give everyone a quick rundown of the mission."

Selene had her back to the squad members, but she could still guess at the astonishment on everyone's faces.

When she had first seen Adrian's squad, she had not looked much better herself.

"Yes, ma'am."

Dylan Hart responded first and stepped up beside Selene.

Selene took out a map and spread it across the ground.

The VDV squad gathered around as well, but if men of their size formed a circle, there would be no room left for the special forces personnel.

With no other choice, Adrian had them stand behind him.

"This is a PvP scenario. Our enemy is a special forces unit from the Eastern Island Alliance."

Selene's map showed an urban district.

However, much of it had been marked over. The area had evidently been bombed into ruins, and those markings indicated buildings that had been flattened.

"Under the Battlefield World's rules, we're the attacking side this time. Our objective is to seize this airport in the northern part of the city."

A large red circle had been drawn in the center of the map.

That was their objective: the airport.

"Both sides have deployed two squads, but the Eastern Island Alliance is in a different position from us. They have light armored units."

The Eastern Island Alliance had expended 200,000 ordinary soldiers to capture an arms-depot instance.

That depot could produce one Type 73 armored personnel carrier for the Eastern Island Alliance each month.

Ordinary AK rounds could not penetrate the vehicle, which was why they had suffered one defeat after another in recent engagements against the Eastern Island Alliance.

The Federation had no anti-armor weapons at all.

At that point, Selene paused and looked toward one of the squad members behind Adrian.

Adrian immediately understood what she meant.

"Don't worry. Leave that APC to us."

Adrian's tone was dismissive.

The Type 73 was little more than an aluminum shell.

Yes, while other armored personnel carriers relied on steel plate for protection, the Type 73 used aluminum armor.

An RPG-7 tandem HEAT round could penetrate 500 millimeters of rolled homogeneous steel armor. Forget the Type 73—it could punch through even the Eastern Island Alliance's daddy's Bradley.
