Chapter 20: The Calm Before the Storm

["So how many people are you telling me to kill?"]

["Yeah. The tent should have the [Soundproofing] skill, so none of the commotion outside will get in. You should probably be able to reach 10%."]

["I know this sounds strange coming from me, but can it really rise that easily?"]

["Hmm... The powers you possess don’t get along, so none of them can stand seeing another pull ahead."]

["Then why can’t I kill all of them?"]

["...Because they’re all useful."]

As I warmed up while recalling that conversation, Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung finished preparing on either side of me.

[The Demon King, ‘Demon God of Wrath and Lust,’ greets you and says it has been a long time.]

"Demon King? Where have you been all this time?"

[The Demon King, ‘Ruler of Eastern Hell,’ apologizes for being unable to see you, explaining that the Demon Kings held their first meeting in several centuries.]

[The constellations of the Absolute Good alignment are wary of the Demon Kings’ arrival.]

[The Demon King, ‘Demon God of Wrath and Lust,’ gives them the finger.]

That’s more like it.

Delighted by the return of the Demon Kings’ chatter, I activated [Goetia].

[72nd Page—Andromalius]

A serpent coiled around my arm as I slowly surveyed the people I was going to kill.

[The story, ■■■ ■■ ■■, tells the story, ‘Kinslayer.’]

"You two, if this is too difficult, I don’t mind doing it alone."

"No. We can’t make you do something this hard by yourself, Seoyun."

"Jung Heewon is right."

I smiled proudly at their replies and lightly swung my arm.

"Huh?"

Crunch

With one person’s head vanishing as the signal, I began killing people.

---

[The story, ■■■ ■■ ■■, says this normally shouldn’t be allowed... but it can’t stand watching this.]

[The story, ■■■ ■■■■ ■■, tells it to raise the rate in moderation.]

[The story, ■■■ ■■ ■■, says it already knows.]

[Synchronization Rate: 10%]

I took off my top and was giving myself a quick rinse in the bathroom to wash away the blood when several messages appeared.

[The constellation, ‘Demon-like Judge of Fire,’ peers at your body through her fingers.]

[The constellation, ‘Lily Blooming in Aquarius,’ stares at her friend with a thoroughly unimpressed expression.]

[The Demon King, ‘Demon God of Wrath and Lust,’ secretly saves an image of your body.]

[The Demon King, ‘Ruler of Eastern Hell,’ saves an image of your body.]

As always, I dismissed the useless messages and focused on the important ones.

[The story, ■■■ ■■ ■■, spits out a story for you.]

Oh, what could it be?

[You have acquired the story, ‘Beloved by Children, Frogs, and Cats (Legendary).’]

...? Excuse me?

More importantly, why is this Legendary-grade...?

[The story, ■■■ ■■ ■■, looks proud of itself.]

I stared at the story I knew nothing about for a while, then simply dismissed it and checked the next message.

[The stigma, [Goetia] Lv. 2, has risen to Lv. 3.]

[Pages up to Page 56 have been unlocked.]

Now this is good!

[The story, ■■■ ■■ ■■, flicks out its tongue and copies a skill from the 59th Page.]

[You have acquired the exclusive skill, [Transformation] Lv. 1.]

Hmm... I thought it only took things from the powers I borrowed... So it was just doing whatever it wanted?

[The story, ■■■ ■■ ■■, thanks you for the compliment.]

That wasn’t a compliment...

After checking all the messages, I roughly dried myself with toilet paper and was about to leave.

[You have fulfilled the conditions for the exclusive attribute, [Child of Good and Evil].]

...What?

Goosebumps rose across my entire body. As far as I could guess, this attribute was what had inflicted me with that incurable illness.

I-If I collapse here...

I would die. My instincts were telling me so.

Just as I despaired because there was no one nearby to help me—

[You have acquired the exclusive skill, [Fanatic] Lv. 1.]

[The exclusive attribute, [Child of Good and Evil], closes its eyes once more.]

Despite all my tension, nothing particularly serious happened. Still, my heart had been pounding so violently that I remained frozen in place for a long time as I tried to calm down.

---

After trudging back to our lodgings, I spent the next several dozen hours buried under the blankets, unable to move from that spot.

The fear that my incurable illness might return, that I might experience that pain again, left me anxious and twisted my stomach into knots.

I nearly ended up living like a shut-in while the angels, Demon Kings, and my companions all worried over me. It was only after Kim Dokja’s group had seized control of the surrounding areas that I managed to pull myself together and leave the lodgings again.

"I’m sorry. I should’ve helped."

"It’s fine. More importantly, Seoyun, are you all right?"

"Yes, Kim Dokja. I’m all right."

"If it gets too hard, leave it to me and get some rest."

"I appreciate the thought, Jung Heewon."

Lee Hyunsung merely stroked my head.

With my companions, the angels, and the Demon Kings all showering me with concern, I listened to the plan going forward.

"Hmm. So we’re going to infiltrate something called the Prophets’ Night and take them down?"

"That’s right. We’re leaving now, so get ready."

"Let’s set off immediately."

Nothing noteworthy happened on our way to Anguk Station. Were they called ground rats? The creatures that had demonstrated the terror of their legion at Chungmuro Station were no match for us, and there wasn’t so much as a glimpse of another person.

When we finally arrived at Anguk Station, a huge crowd welcomed us.

"Looks like no one has occupied this place."

"It’s an agreement among the Prophets. Meeting on territory occupied by someone else could be dangerous, after all."

I let the explanation go in one ear and out the other as I looked around.

Are they all gay? They look like it, and Kim Dokja currently looks like Yoo Joonghyuk.

Could it be that the Prophets were some kind of enormous gay collective?

While I was pondering this grave question—

"It is truly an honor to meet you, Yoo Joonghyuk!"

At that shout, the crowd surged toward us. The largest number gathered around Yoo Joonghyuk—Kim Dokja—followed by Lee Hyunsung, and then Jung Heewon, whom they had mistaken for Lee Jihye.

I waited too, my heart pounding with anticipation. I had been so busy that I’d forgotten, but hadn’t my original goal been to socialize with other people? With that thought, I waited.

Everyone kept their distance while watching me warily.

....? Excuse me?

[The constellation, ‘Guardian of Youth and Travel,’ quietly consoles you.]

I mean... I was used to being alone, but...

This is sad...

As I sank into sorrow...

Flutter

"Is that a meteorite?"

"Haha, that is correct. You may not know this at your current point in time, Yoo Joonghyuk, but according to the revelation, a powerful weapon lies within it."

What...? What is that ominous thing...?

The moment the cloth covering the object at the center was removed and its true form was revealed, chills ran down my spine.

...That thing is evil.

And it was an evil far beyond what we could currently handle. It might have been different if Yoo Joonghyuk were here, but as we were now, we couldn’t deal with that thing. In the brief moment my body froze—

Ruuuumble

A tremendous vibration shook the area, and we lost our final chance to escape.

"Everyone, run!"

"What? Run? What are you..."

[The constellations protesting the excessive filtering lower their signs.]

[A considerable number of constellations watch the ‘omen’ with sparkling eyes.]

[The constellation, ‘Prisoner of the Golden Headband,’ watches the situation with curiosity.]

I hurried over to my companions.

"Was it that guy called Number 1,124 who told everyone to gather here today?"

"What? I’m not sure about that. I thought we had all agreed on it together..."

Seeing the gravity on Kim Dokja’s face told me there was no chance of this situation ending easily.

["Everyone, get behind me."]

["Are we running away?"]

["We can’t. As you can see, a barrier has formed."]

I checked at those words and saw that a barrier really had appeared. While our group grew increasingly anxious at the realization—

Crack

[An omen of the fifth main scenario has appeared.]

"Huh? What’s this? Why is a main scenario suddenly..."

Flash!

Crash

The head of a foolish human who had approached the meteorite—or was it an egg?—went flying, and lava spilled out from within the egg.

The platform burned, releasing a foul stench. The temperature around us soared so quickly that it became difficult to breathe.

Crunch!

["What... in the world is that?"]

Thick claws crushed the Prophets, and every sweep of its enormous tail added more corpses to the pile. Boiling lava streamed between its dark crimson scales, and its mere breath scorched the air and earth. It was a single—

["Catastrophe."]

It was a catastrophe.

[The Grade 5 Fire Dragon species, ‘Lesser Dragon Ignir,’ has appeared!]
