Chapter 17: Eden

Eden—the Nebula and home of the angels of the Apocalypse. At the heart of its garden, where lambs—actual lambs—roamed, stood an enormous tree that Raphael loved more than any other.

Beneath that tree, two archangels were discussing the Scribe's unbelievable behavior.

["■■ I think the Scribe has lost her mind!"]

["R-Raphael, you're speaking normally..."]

["■■ Is that really what matters right now?"]

["Hic!"]

There was Raphael, who had a childlike build, a complex about her height, and a distinctive habit of speaking in internet slang. Beside her was Raguel, whose faint freckles and timid-looking face practically screamed, I'm shy.

["■■ It doesn't make any sense! I'm telling you, the Scribe was grinning like an idiot!"]

["...Isn't that a good thing...?"]

["...Well, yeah, but she's changed way too much, way too suddenly! Her long speeches don't even last an hour anymore, and when Uriel and Gabriel cause trouble, she just lets it slide!!"]

Raphael was ranting so passionately that she had completely broken character, while Raguel could only listen, unsure what to do.

Just then, another archangel approached the tree where they were talking.

["It certainly feels strange when the Scribe, who should be setting an example for the other angels, acts that way."]

["Blech! Jophiel?"]

["...That sort of reaction hurts even my feelings."]

It was Jophiel, whose long red hair was tied into a ponytail. Jophiel had a cold appearance and, somehow, the sort of face that suggested a weak ass. After letting out a deep sigh, Jophiel spoke.

["The reason she's changed must be because of a certain incarnation."]

["...Han Seoyun?"]

Han Seoyun was currently a person of interest whom the archangels were watching closely—an incarnation who wielded the power of Demon Kings while also possessing divine power so refined that anyone would believe she was an angel.

["Haven't we all seen it? Whether in reality or through the Star Stream broadcast, we've seen the way the Scribe looks at the incarnation Han Seoyun."]

Watching Star Stream broadcasts she had rarely paid attention to before and grinning like a fool, checking her appearance in the mirror, secretly taking pictures that Jophiel tried—but failed—to stop entirely, and becoming far more lenient despite her formerly exacting nature... The Scribe's drastic changes whenever she looked at Han Seoyun were too numerous to count.

["But she's changed way too much..."]

["Well, I don't think it's a bad thing. Ever since the Messiah ascended, the Scribe has lived each day as if she were dying."]

["Th-That's true..."]

["Phew... She certainly seems better now than she did before."]

["■■!! You scared me!!"]

At some point, Michael had appeared, smoking a cigarette(?). Her defining features were long golden hair, violet eyes, and a stern-looking face.

["W-Weren't you busy? More importantly, if the Scribe c-catches you smoking, you'll be disciplined..."]

["Well, I was busy, but things over there went quiet, so I was taking a break. Besides, the Scribe didn't give me any trouble when she saw me smoking."]

["Y-Yes...? Th-That can't be..."]

["...If the Scribe isn't stopping you, then I can hardly do so myself."]

["More importantly, why are these ■■s making such a ■■ racket in my nest?"]

["It's not your nest. It's where you take naps."]

More figures soon joined the noisy gathering of archangels.

["What? Why is everyone here? Is today some special occasion?"]

Gabriel arrived, with wavy blue hair and a prickly-looking face.

["What an unusual group."]

Uriel joined them as well, her long, wavy blonde hair styled half-up and her eyes shining emerald green.

["■■ My nest..."]

["More importantly, why did the two of you come together?"]

["We were fighting on the way here."]

["...I see."]

["So what are all of you doing here?"]

Jophiel summarized the conversation they had just been having.

["The Scribe... Hmm. She certainly has been different lately."]

["Yeah... She really has been different lately."]

["Ah, ■■. It gives me the creeps when we think the same thing."]

["What? You ■■■?"]

["■■ You really want to settle this once and for all today, don't you?"]

The archangels casually ignored Gabriel and Uriel as the two began fighting yet again.

["M-More importantly, why is the Scribe so obsessed with her...? Her divine power may be on a similar level to ours, but... there are several incarnations like that, aren't there...?"]

Michael took out another cigarette and spoke.

["...I sensed something familiar in her divine power. I can't be certain, but that's probably why the Scribe is so obsessed with her."]

The archangels stared at Michael in confusion. Unable to contain her curiosity, Raguel bit the bullet and asked.

["Wh-What was it?"]

["The Messiah."]

A chill instantly descended over the archangels. Raphael, unable to endure the atmosphere, finally spoke.

["...Th-That doesn't make any sense..."]

["Th-That's right...!"]

Jophiel, who had been deep in thought, opened her mouth.

["You all remember the two souls who recently drifted into Eden despite not being scheduled to arrive, correct?"]

Uriel suddenly came to her senses and answered.

["Y-Yeah, I remember. Eden went on high alert because of them, didn't it?"]

["We never found the cause, so we're keeping those two souls under observation for now, right?"]

["Coincidentally, both souls were connected to Han Seoyun. If—and this is a very large if—the incarnation Han Seoyun possesses the Messiah's power or is the Messiah's reincarnation, it would adequately explain both the Scribe's current state and the situation with those souls."]

Gabriel frowned gravely before speaking.

["Then what about the Demon King's power? How do you explain that?"]

Michael closed her eyes and savored her cigarette before answering.

["There was one other being who ascended, remember?"]

Raguel spoke with trembling eyes.

["The First Lord of Hell..."]

Raphael finished for her.

["Baal."]

Once again, the atmosphere turned frigid. Sensing it, the lambs fled the area, and the lesser angels hurried away as well.

["Then it all makes sense."]

["For some reason, the incarnation Han Seoyun has become capable of using the powers of the ascended Messiah and Baal."]

Looking thoroughly enraged, Michael crushed the cigarette pack in her fist and walked off somewhere.

["■■ That sly ■ Metatron hid this from me?"]

No one heard Michael's muttered words.

["Then... we absolutely have to bring Seoyun to Eden, don't we?"]

Uriel spoke in a strangely excited voice, and Jophiel agreed.

["If my theory is correct..."]

["We may be able to end the War of Saints and Demons."]

Uriel abruptly thrust her hand into the air.

["And we'll finally get a male archangel!"]

[".....? Uriel, what does that have to do with any—"]

["You ■■■? Do you have any idea how large the age gap is between her and us? More importantly, I thought you didn't even like Han Seoyun that much?"]

Uriel averted her eyes.

["O-Oh, come on... When did I ever say that?"]

["Well... I suppose it would be nice to have a male archangel, but workplace romances are forbidden in the first pla—"]

["The Scribe abolished that rule."]

["...Excuse me...?"]

For once, Jophiel looked genuinely flustered.

["■■... No, I mean... what?"]

Raphael, who had been listening in silence, muttered.

["■■ Eden is doomed..."]

["I-I agree, at least to some extent."]

And so, Eden was peaceful as ever.

--

"Achoo!"

"What was that, Han Seoyun? Do you have a cold?"

"Ah... No... I just suddenly felt a chill..."
