Anyone who lives long enough has probably dreamed at least once of being reborn into the life of someone successful.
Enough money to live idly for the rest of your life, power that makes other people bow their heads. Every time you imagine that kind of life, something in your chest tingles and you end up getting drunk on all sorts of fantasies.
Was that a bad thought? Absolutely not.
It was only the natural desire every human being carries.
So when I realized I had been reincarnated as a noble-born corporate magnate, I screamed with joy inside.
Rent, student loans, and graveyard-shift part-time jobs would all be someone else’s problem now.
At least, that was what I thought until one second ago.
"Fuck... Of all things, I had to be reborn into a mess tied to these bastards....."
Now that I knew the truth, I realized my situation was thoroughly fucked.
If there were a button in front of me right now that could send me back to my life before reincarnation, I would abandon this new life without a second thought, noble bloodline and corporate fortune be damned, and press that button over and over again.
Why was I overreacting like this, you ask?
Because I had just found out I was an executive and working-level manager at the worst evil corporation that should never have existed in reality.
I didn’t think it was wrong to long for a life with wealth and power, but I knew all too well how rotten this bottom-feeding company was, treating people like laboratory rats.
That alone was enough to confirm that my life was ruined, and when I learned my name, I even wondered if it would be better to just kill myself right here and now.
[Umbrella Pharmaceuticals Antarctic Branch Research Director: Alexander Ashford]
I know exactly who the man with that name is.
The man who "created" children for his own selfish desires, only to meet a horrific death at the hands of the two children he created later on—no, an end even more miserable than death.
A pitiful man who would be reduced to mere "test material" in the hands of the children he made himself.
As I paced around the office, wracking my brain for a way to get out of this godawful situation, I noticed two pairs of bright, watchful eyes peering at me through the slightly open office door.
"Father, are you alrigh...t?"
The children peeking through the crack in the door were named Alfred Ashford and Alexia Ashford.
They were the peerless geniuses, the test-tube twins, created in Alexander Ashford’s lifetime through genetic manipulation and artificial insemination.
If I remembered correctly, those children would one day learn the secret of their birth and try to kill me.
'If I kill them before they kill me...'
Before I knew it, my hand was already moving.
There was no sound.
No footsteps, no breathing. My hand simply reached out slowly toward that small neck, as if it had been decided from the very beginning.
The children did not dodge.
Alexia blinked. Then, with a face as calm as ever, she took my hand.
Her cold fingertips settled on top of that small, warm palm.
Alexia then brought my hand to her cheek. Like a kitten nuzzling up to its owner.
At that moment, something snapped.
When I saw that, a vague sense of self-loathing washed over me—how ugly a human being could become, and how little I differed from those Umbrella vermin.
Even if these children would grow up to become some of Umbrella’s most infamous villains, they were still innocent children for now...
Then, all of a sudden, an astonishing thought flashed through my mind.
'Oh, fuck, why didn’t I think of that sooner?'
They weren’t villains yet. Then couldn’t I just raise them properly?
And later, I could send them not to Umbrella, but to the heroes of this world and leave them in their care.
Of course, that wouldn’t be easy.
After all, what I was doing was turning against Umbrella, and Umbrella were the kind of bastards who had long since become experts at dealing with traitors. If you considered how many characters in this game had tried to betray Umbrella only to be disposed of, that was even more true.
But if I was going to die either way, wouldn’t it be better to at least try to run for the faintest sliver of a chance, rather than be reduced to these children’s test subject?
The two children in front of me seemed to sense something off about Alexander’s behavior, different from usual, and were looking at me with a bit of caution.
"Fath...er?"
To ease their wariness, I placed both hands on their heads and patted them gently.
"Kids, it may be too late, but from now on, let’s try changing things together."
And so began my desperate struggle to survive the world’s worst pharmaceutical company and my psychopath children.
