Chapter 19: [Hazard] - (22 Years Before the Original) Rapture Hunting: Core Extraction Labor 4

Rip and break.

From Grave’s perspective, that was the essence of Hook’s fighting style.

But did that mean he was some savage brute who simply tore things apart like a mindless beast?

Not quite.

The commonality between cells and molecules is that when they form a collective—be it an object or a living organism—there are points of connection.

The less damage there is, the lower the loss. Physically "tearing" something usually implies a massive loss of material.

Yet, very little was lost.

It wasn't entirely absent, but the loss rate was so negligible that it was practically meaningless.

Every time Hook unleashed a skill, the mysterious energy bodies—spirits—that manifested behind him or in the air looked like beasts, and their methods of attack were crude and primitive.

And yet, they were terrifyingly efficient, inflicting fatal damage through their smashing and tearing.

Even the Raptures broken and killed by Hook’s fists suffered such minimal molecular loss that their components could still be recycled.

Grave had always been amazed by this exquisitely, and strangely, "delicate tearing"—and then—

KRAZAZAZAZAZAZAZAZAZAK!

{ KIIIAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! }

She witnessed a scene so cataclysmic that saying "the world was being torn apart" would not have been an exaggeration.

Hook’s back was turned, so his expression remained hidden.

However, the voice he had uttered before unleashing that monstrous skill was so cold and sharp it sent shivers racing down her spine.

Transformed into a bizarre entity radiating blue light, Hook swept his "claws" in every direction, literally ripping the air asunder.

The blue slashes cleaved through space and atmosphere, shredding the great calamity—the highest rank of Rapture and vanguard of the Queen, the Heretic.

Librelio’s body was being torn to ribbons "like a piece of paper."

Librelio let out a piercing scream, desperately trying to break free.

Grave was swept away by the shockwaves and gale-force winds generated by the Hyper Skill, Spirit Incarnation.

Hook, now a massive blue spirit, violently shredded everything in his vicinity.

Grave, who had been certain this was a disaster and a guaranteed defeat, could only stare in disbelief at his absurd power. With a hollow laugh, she clutched the incubator and the Glass Slipper armament tightly, trying her best to minimize the impact.

RUMBLE-RUMBLE-RUMBLE-RUMBLE!

KRAZAZAZAZAZAZAZAZAK!

"Kgh!"

The weight was far from light.

Between the incubator containing Cinderella, the weight of her dedicated Glass Slipper armament, and Grave’s own NIKKE chassis, the total mass was something a human could barely lift even with specialized support equipment.

Despite the mechanical strength required just to hold them, Grave had to endure ground-shaking shockwaves, vibrating air, and the violent aftershocks of the blast.

She fought desperately to hold her ground against a destructive force that could only be described as a natural disaster.

KRAZAZAZAZAZAZAZAZAK! BOOM!

"Hwaaaah!?"

The giant spirit's seemingly endless butchery culminated in one final, violent sweep of the claws.

The resulting slash distorted the very fabric of space.

The shockwave hitting the air was powerful enough to rattle Grave's entire frame.

Quickly regaining her composure, Grave looked around, only to be left utterly speechless by the carnage.

"...Guh... guhk... ugh... uh... ugh!"

Librelio had not only been miserably torn apart; her arms and legs were scattered across the battlefield, and more than half of the jellyfish-like Rapture floating near her head had been shredded.

The face and body of Librelio—once elegant, cold, and beautiful—were now gouged with hideous claw marks.

The core area, which should have been rapidly repaired by nanomachines, was more than half exposed, spewing a red catalyst from every open wound.

She had become more than just a corpse brought back to life; the sight of her gasping for breath in such a wretched state was enough to make any observer nauseous.

"Phew~ Hyper Skills are taxing, but the power is definitely there~. But... is it because she's a Heretic? I can't believe she's still alive after that."

Meanwhile, Hook—the human who had utterly crushed the Heretic—was panting heavily, his body drenched in sweat.

Other than the exhaustion, he was completely unscathed.

The sheer physical toll of the technique was evident, but aside from looking worn out, he had taken no damage.

Ignoring Grave's gaze, Hook stepped toward the gasping, half-dead Librelio.

Then, he reached out and grabbed the half-exposed core, which was flickering weakly with a red light.

Grab. Clutch.

"......."

"Guh... guhk... guh... uh... ugh..."

"Hah~ You're a stubborn bitch. Move your hand."

"Guh... uh... uh... ugh..."

"What are you even saying? You're just wheezing like a dying animal. Whatever... just give me the core."

Under normal circumstances, that hand would have easily crushed a human's grip or snatched their life in an instant.

The "broken hand"—with exposed bone, wires instead of veins, and a mess of red catalyst instead of blood—weakly clung to Hook's arm.

She resisted desperately, making choking sounds as if on the verge of death, but Hook casually brushed her off.

Creak. Crunch! Rip!

"Ah... ah... ahh... uhh... aah... aah... aah!?"

"Is it because this is basically your 'heart'? You're damn stubborn!"

Snap! Crunch! Rip!

"Aaaagh! AAAAAAAAGH!"

As the core was slowly ripped from its socket with a sickening sound, Librelio was consumed, for the first time, by the agony and terror of death.

Born human, converted into a NIKKE, then corrupted while fighting Raptures to become an "irregular" serving the Queen.

Then, modified by the Raptures, she was reborn as a Heretic.

Unlike her time as a NIKKE, she had revived with immense power and alien abilities.

Every Rapture, save for the Queen, obeyed her commands.

She had slaughtered every foolish human and NIKKE who dared challenge her.

She forgave no one who disturbed her "stillness" or interrupted her "slumber," not even fellow Raptures or other Heretics.

Stronger than any being except the Queen, she commanded absolute terror—a fact recognized by the Queen herself, who allowed her to dwell in seclusion within the black-tinted Silver Lake, forever sleeping.

'Die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die die' 'I'm dying!'

She had pursued "stillness."

But that was a stillness she desired while alive; she never wanted the stillness brought by death.

It was a selfish, yet natural, survival instinct.

As death closed in, she looked at the "human"... no, the "monster" before her, who was expressionlessly tearing out her core.

"I... don't... want... to... die...!"

Consumed by fear, she struggled desperately, but her body—now worse than a corpse—refused to obey.

Normally, as long as the core remains intact, a Heretic possesses the unique ability to absorb nearby Raptures or NIKKEs to revive.

Thus, even if Hook extracted the core, the core's own strong ego and survival instinct would allow her to plot her return in the future.

"Sa... ve... me...!"

"You'd be alive if you hadn't attacked. Why come here and invite death? Hm? Just give me the core~"

She felt it.

The moment Hook tore the core away.

She knew that today was truly the end.

She tried to move her ruined body with everything she had, forcibly boosting the output of her tattered tentacles and the failing core.

"Stop struggling."

CRUNCH! FZZZT!

"!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?"

"Damn it, this thing is really stuck! Just come out already!"

TUG! CRRRRK! SNAP! SNAP!

As Hook increased the grip strength of his hand, the core caved in slightly, and an explosion of agony washed over her.

Not satisfied, and complaining that the core wouldn't budge, he stomped on her face and began ripping the core out mercilessly, as if pulling a potato from the earth.

It was like having her heart extracted—and for a Rapture or NIKKE, the core is exactly that. Librelio, forced to experience this agony with a clear mind, felt her consciousness begin to fade.

"Guh... guaa... aaah... ■■■■■■■■■■..."

Yet, did her instinct to survive drag out a final spark of strength?

Librelio managed a faint, brief [Calling Signal] to summon other Raptures. Hook flinched at the sound, and Grave, watching from the side, was visibly shocked.

Even in a state where moving or screaming was nearly impossible, she had managed to send the signal. Just as Grave drew her weapon to prepare for an ambush—

Grrrk!

The ground groaned and lifted slightly.

KWAHHHHHHH! THUMP!

"Hook!"

"Whoa!?"

KABOOM!

With a violent explosion, Hook was struck by something and sent flying. Grave immediately opened fire on the entity that had emerged.

Librelio lost consciousness and closed her eyes, that being the last thing she saw.

The entity that had answered her faint [Calling Signal] was...

Tyrant Rapture, model name 'Grave Digger.'

The "worm" had launched a surprise attack, knocking Hook high into the air.

=================

I wanted to test the power of my first Hyper Skill and see just how durable a Heretic really was.

Librelio had left a strong impression on players despite only appearing once.

She hadn't even been officially released in-game; she was just an illustration hidden in the client files, which only added to the anticipation.

A jellyfish-like hybrid of NIKKE and Rapture.

She gave off an aura of strength associated with the "deep sea," almost like something out of Cthulhu mythos.

I believed I could win, and the result proved it. The Hyper Skill [Spirit Incarnation] didn't just suppress her—it left her on the brink of death instantly.

Thanks to that, I could easily extract the core and find a clue to waking Cinderella. I felt a brief surge of satisfaction at having taken down a Heretic for future use, but it was short-lived.

"Waaaaah!"

THUD! CRASH!

"Ow... my head...!"

Some worm bastard had popped up from under my feet without a single warning.

The Grave Digger had wriggled violently, using its drill-head to launch me skyward.

It didn't send me straight up, but in a wide arc. As a result, I lost my grip on Librelio and slammed headfirst into the ground.

A normal person's skull would have shattered, but unfortunately for the Raptures, my body had become absurdly tough from all the fighting.

In short, falling headfirst wasn't enough to kill me.

"Damn it... what the hell is happening!"

BOOM! BANG! BANG! POW! KABOOM!

The distance had widened significantly during my flight, and I could see clouds of dust and hear explosions in the distance.

Through the haze, I could see the silhouette of the Grave Digger, fully emerged and shielding Librelio.

And there was Grave, raining down indiscriminate bombardment on the Digger.

With her spare body upgrade, Grave's firepower was enough to deal serious damage to a Tyrant Rapture, and the Digger was no exception.

However, a one-on-one match between a Tyrant and a single NIKKE is heavily skewed in favor of the Rapture. Grave was at a severe disadvantage, so I hurried to rejoin her.

{ GIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING }

DUDUDUDUDUDUDUDUDU! THOOM!

With a violent tremor in the earth, two more Diggers emerged.

I quickly used [Arrived] to blink behind them and secure my vision, avoiding the spray of dirt and debris.

{ GIIIIIIIIIIING }

"What now!?"

I spotted an octopus-like floating Rapture approaching Librelio, wrapping her in its tentacles to carry her away.

Judging by its size, it was a Lord-class. It seemed three Tyrants and one Lord-class were coordinating to buy time for the Heretic's escape.

...No way... the Queen?

I had heard Librelio's [Calling Signal] just before I almost pulled the core.

But there is a world of difference in the speed at which Raptures swarm when a standard signal is used versus when the Queen intervenes.

And yet, three Tyrants and one Lord appeared "exactly as planned," blocking my path and rescuing the Heretic?

I looked at the Digger blocking my way and let out a hollow laugh.

"So this bitch is a total pervert, huh? Secretly watching us and then interfering at the perfect moment? Ha... hahahahahahaha!"

This ridiculous situation.

The chance to wake Cinderella slipping through my fingers.

The rational suspicion that she had been watching us from the very start.

"I was just going to quietly help Cinderella and Grave, then ride the wave in peace... but I guess that's not happening, is it?"

A sudden surge of rage hit me, realizing I'd been played this whole time—

"If that's what you want, I'll give it to you."

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO—!

A massive gate, radiating a dark, oppressive energy, manifested in the sky and began sweeping everything in its path.

Grave, who had been attacking, stopped in her tracks.

The three Diggers trying to block me froze.

Even the Lord-class Rapture (Fingers) carrying Librelio away paused.

When everyone looked up toward the sky—

[[[[[[[[[[ WRYYYYYYYYYYYYY! ]]]]]]]]]]

Purple energy and "dark spirits" erupted from beyond the gate, letting out bizarre cheers as they began to annihilate the surroundings.

BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM-BOOM!
