Chapter 1: 1 Human = 75 Leather

Beep— Beep— Beep—

Along with an earsplitting siren, red warning lights running on emergency power flashed.

Like on any spaceship, these last-resort safety measures only ever kicked in right before everything went completely to shit.

And the fate of astronauts caught in such fucked-up situations was always much the same.

Hiss—

"Urk!"

The terrible dizziness that accompanied the preservatives which had filled my whole body being redistributed into my bloodstream again was apparently not something one could easily get used to.

After cursing the side effects that must have been written in rice-grain-sized print somewhere in the dozens of pages of contracts I had signed before entering the cryosleep pod, I checked the situation.

"What the hell is this?"

Beyond the still-beeping siren and red lights, I could see the bridge outside the cabin door, ripped deeply apart as if some beast had raked through it.

It had to be that kind of emergency, which was why the cryosleep pods that should have been letting us sleep peacefully had all ejected their contents at once.

And I was presumably one of those contents.

"And an emergency like that would be...?"

It could just be hard-working space pirates, or an attack by mechanoids that hated all humans, or perhaps...

"A crazy Archonexus suddenly throwing a fit..."

In truth, that was the cause of over half the incidents in this universe, so it was not entirely impossible.

The problem was that I could not possibly find any reason for something as grand as an Archonexus to take an interest in a tiny passenger ship like this.

"...Slowly."

As the other cryosleep pods around me began ejecting their contents as well, I could hear loud gasps and the movements of passengers who had yet to grasp the situation from all around.

Of course, it did not take long before they vanished, leaving behind only a brief scream amid a deafening roar.

Offering them my condolences in my heart, I threw myself into the nearest escape pod while they bought me time.

Rumble rumble rumble

Kyaaaah—!

With a grotesque shriek at my back—one that did not seem to belong to this world, and likely came from the master of this attack—I was launched toward the nearest planet.

That planet was a frontier world... Hm. If I had known it was a planet in the Rimworld, perhaps I would have just self-destructed cleanly.

.

"I am wearing no less than three humans’ worth of human. Then doesn’t that make me the most human thing on this planet right now?"

"That’s a unit I’ve never heard before."

"Ah... You don’t know? A body wrap and a windbreaker take 140 leather..."

"...Fuck."

-----

Today’s Rimworld average.

1 human equals 75 leather.

It was information I had not wanted to know.
