Chapter 2: Surviving on the Surface -1 (Revised)

I’m fucked.

I’m seriously fucking fucked.

I—

after hurling a barrage of curses at Queen, punched through the wall beside me and made a break for it like Sasuke.

Farewell, everyone! I was going to throw off every chain and shackle in this world and live freeeeeee—

Booom!!

But when I broke through the wall, it was fucking space....

As everyone knows, there’s no oxygen in space. In other words, no air.

And that means? I can’t move in space without a suit?

In short, I became an ant on water.

Wheee, wheee... wheeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

"What the hell is that?"

When I somehow spun around once, a red light was gathering and rippling from the wall I’d smashed through, like a Spirit Bomb.

I flailed at the ominous sight, but—

KWA-BOOOOOOM!!!!!

"You’ve got to be kidding me."

A red laser hit me and sent me flying.

I’m still flying now.

"GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!"

You fucking mother!!! (Not my mother.)

I’m definitely going to kill yooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!

.

.

.

.

Earth—the only planet discovered so far where humans and other life-forms can live.

There had been all sorts of research into whether people could live on Mars or the Moon, but the conclusion was that Earth was the ideal planet.

But—

that was a story of the past.

Whiiiiir.

Thud. Thud.

In the future—105 years before the original story began—massive machines of unknown origin, the Raptures, invaded Earth from space.

Every country sent out its military to respond.

They all retired. The air force crashed without firing a single missile, while bizarre monsters appeared in the sea.

That was why NIKKEs were created.

To fight those fucking Raptures in place of humans.

—That’s this world’s setting.

.....But how much longer am I going to keep falling?

.

.

.

.

Thud thud thud thud.

Long after the surface had been taken by the Raptures, a Tyrant-class Rapture—heavy machinery grade—was prowling about.

It swept its surroundings with blazing crimson eyes, like a beast searching for prey.

Whirr, whirr.

Having confirmed there were no humans around, the Rapture—

KWA-BOOOOOOM!!!!!

"???????"

was suddenly smashed apart by something that came flying in before it could even leave a last word.

The something—someone—that had unintentionally turned the Rapture into two halves like a Twin Bar soon staggered upright amid the wreckage.

"Urgh, my baaaack.... No, what the hell is this??!!"

Then, spotting the corpse(?) beneath him, he jumped as if a porcupine had stabbed him in the sole of his foot.

Who the hell turned this big bastard into this?

... ... ...

"But damn, it really is desolate..."

Maybe because the game’s setting was a dystopian world, but the area around me was nothing but desert and ruined buildings.

But an even bigger problem had come up.

I can’t remember what kind of person I was!!

I know I came to another world! But! But!

I don’t know who I am.

There isn’t even one percent of a memory about what I did to make a living in that other world.

I remember that I was a man... I... think... Wait a second.

Yeah, fortunately, I haven’t been neutered.

I walked forward to look around.

The tombstones of buildings stretched on ahead, utterly devoid of life.

All sorts of promotional flyers tumbled across the ground like fallen leaves, while nothing but ocher dust and sand filled the city.

"Should I get out of here right away...?"

Just as I decided this place was a lost cause and tried to take a step, my reflection appeared in a glass wall.

"....Oh?"

I looked about 180 centimeters tall...? Nice.

My eyes were bigger too. Nice!!

Whoa... but my eye color was red.

"Ah, damn it."

As far as I remembered, there were two major things in this game that made everything so miserable.

Humans, and corruption.

To spoil it for you, this is how a NIKKE is made.

1. Take a woman’s brain.

2. Put it into a Body—a kind of artificial human body.

See? Easy, right?

By turning people into weapons of war like this, the government and the public gradually came to view them as nothing more than weapons.

They used them and threw them away, and treated NIKKE deaths lightly, as though filling the vacancies they left behind. That led to some tragic... incidents....

Just like the ending our war veterans get in South Korea, fuck.

Think of corruption as the misery button. It’s brainwashing by which the Raptures I mentioned earlier turn NIKKEs to their side.

That’s why players lose their shit. What do I mean? Install NIKKE and just try Chapter 1.

But what does that have to do with my eyes?

A fucking lot.

One symptom of corruption is that your eyes turn red like a rabbit’s.

So what happens if I go to people claiming I’m a survivor like this?

It’ll be, "What’chu gonna do!" and my head will get lopped right off like that Golden Apple from next door.

Tch.... Should I cover them up...?

I stared at my eyes for a while, then looked below my body and immediately frowned.

Steel frames, like the skeleton of a laboratory, made up my body, and between them something red was shining in the center of my chest.

That’s... a Core?

.....Should I touch it?

...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

I forgot something.

NIKKEs and Raptures have something in common that they carry in their bodies.

That is the Core, a kind of heart.

But I touched it with my bare hand, so AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

.

.

Everyone, never touch a Core with your bare hands AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

.

—Human Allied Forces Base

".....Phew..."

A man in a brown fedora and sunglasses rummaged through the pocket of his coat on a building rooftop, as though concealing something.

A small, long white stick.

A cigarette.

"Man, I used to smoke like a chimney when I was a mercenary."

.....Just one cigarette....

He looked around once more, took a lighter from his other pocket, and soon exhaled smoke.

The government had formed the Human Allied Forces.

The surviving military commanders had joined their forces together.

When they became short on manpower, they eventually even hired mercenaries.

And I, smoking this cigarette right now, had also been a mercenary.

Phewww...

Exhaling the smoke he had held in his mouth, he wore a relieved expression, as if something blocked inside him had finally cleared.

"Ahh, it really hits the spot after so long."

"Mmm~ Is that sooooo?"

"Right? You want one too—wait, who..."

Crrrunch.

"Guhhhhh!!!!"

Something heavy twisted his side, and a scream rose involuntarily from his throat.

"Didn’t you promise me that you’d quit smoking? Hm?"

"Guh! Liliweiss...! I get it, so AAAAAAGH!!!"

"Why do you never listen to me, seriously!!"

Afterward, he got thoroughly scolded, and when he called her a mecha gorilla, he got hit one more time.
