Chapter 15: The Calm Before the Storm

Today, too, was a peaceful day, no different from before.

For some reason, Finn and Gareth were quiet today, while Riveria seemed to be in a good mood.

Which was precisely why it was an unsettling day.

Something always seemed to happen on days like this.

Drawing on experience, Ian felt uneasy, and unable to calm himself, he began showing it through his actions.

"Would you sit still?"

"...Sorry about that."

Riveria snapped at Ian, who had been unable to sit still and kept pacing around.

The small building they used as their Familia Home was a hut with only two rooms, so all four members of the Familia often gathered in the same space.

The rooms and living area were hardly spacious, either. Naturally, if Ian kept wandering around like that, it would make everyone uncomfortable, not just Riveria.

Understanding that, Ian apologized first.

His tone had been rather rude, but Riveria was in a decent mood today, so she let it slide. For the moment, the matter appeared settled.

Finn suddenly felt pain in his thumb.

"We’ve got trouble!"

At Loki’s shout as she kicked open the door, Finn rose from his seat.

The pain he had felt in his finger earlier made him suspect that something ominous was about to happen.

Gareth was more startled by Finn’s abrupt movement than by Loki’s shout.

It was rare for the Pallum before him to react so nimbly outside of combat, and Finn’s expression alone was enough to infer just how serious the situation was.

Ian was surprised as well.

Of course, he had expected them to take some sort of action.

The adventurers he had knocked flat in the tavern did not seem like the sort to simply accept their defeat.

Still, for trouble to break out the very next day...

"Tyr has challenged us to a War Game! It’s because of the fight before—"

"Ha... Damn it. I knew it was too quiet."

Ian cut himself off before he could curse further, grabbed his equipment, and headed out of the Familia Home. His movements were simple and direct, devoid of hesitation or shock.

To begin with, the Loki Familia had extremely limited options in this situation.

Surrender, or accept the challenge.

Even Loki’s exceptional social finesse would be useless against Tyr.

He was a warlike god, and even in the heavens he had not been on particularly good terms with Loki.

No matter what Loki said, he would dismiss it, and Loki herself knew that better than anyone.

Ian knew nothing about the relationship between Loki and Tyr, but he could at least instinctively tell what action he himself could take right now.

Whether in the Dungeon or in any number of other situations, Ian was the quickest member of the Loki Familia to respond.

The reaction speed and snap judgment he had honed on the battlefield were impressive enough to rival Finn’s.

"Ian, where are you going?"

"The Dungeon. Where else would I go?"

He seized his beloved weapon and walked out of the Familia Home.

He was going to the Dungeon.

He said nothing more, but every member of the Familia understood what Ian meant.

"Looks like there’s no time to slack off."

"Regrettably, no."

"Let’s go, quickly. Who knows what that idiot Human will get up to in the Dungeon."

Finn, Gareth, and Riveria then gathered their own equipment and headed for the Dungeon.

Left alone, Loki let out a dumbfounded "Huh?" before soon breaking into a hearty chuckle.

"Ah, this is so fun I could die... My children are quite warlike, aren’t they...?"

Loki’s crimson eyes shone brightly.
