The thing about the stats in My Hero Academia is that their standards are rather inconsistent, and even characters sharing identical ratings can differ greatly in practical ability.
For example, Yaoyorozu and All Might are both rated with S-rank intelligence, while Overhaul sports a C-rank in power.
Consider prime All Might: despite having S+ power and speed on paper—and being notably behind in technique—he still managed to overwhelm All For One. This shows that while the numbers provide a rough guideline, they don’t fully capture a character’s true capabilities.
So please regard these stats as rough approximations, not exact measures.
Power
I debated for a while whether to rate Power as A or A+. Ultimately, because Rikiido Sato’s second official character book lists his Power stat as A, I awarded Kirishima an A+.
At this point, Kirishima clearly surpasses Sato in terms of raw strength. I did hesitate somewhat since Re-Destro is rated A+, but A simply wouldn’t have done him justice.
Speed
In boxing, speed is split into two components: the quickness of the hands (attack speed) and the overall body speed.
The term “high velocity” can be a bit ambiguous—rapid-fire combinations or swift body movements might both be described that way—so it’s not an easy concept to neatly define.
For Kirishima, his hand speed is undeniably S-rank and even at the top of that echelon, while his body speed is slightly lower, around A+.
Taking everything into account, his overall speed is rated S.
Technique
When it comes to technical skill, Kirishima stands at the pinnacle among modern martial heroes. In a pure hand-to-hand brawl, he can even be compared to All Might.
This edge largely comes from their differing temperaments. While All Might tends to rely on straightforward brute force, Kirishima adapts his tactics on the fly. He can circle around to land quick, precise strikes before darting away, or close in and overwhelm an opponent with a barrage of blows.
Depending on the situation, he might even engage in extremely close combat, using sharp knees or elbows to cut through an opponent’s defense. Moreover, with his keen spatial awareness and insight, he’s capable of taking on foes who are faster and stronger than he is, while his innate resistance to Quirk effects helps nullify specialized attacks.
Now that I’ve laid it all out, he truly does come off as a monstrous cheat. The reason he isn’t rated S+ is simply that he lacks experience in combat forms beyond pure hand-to-hand fighting—he’s never faced the challenges of aerial or underwater combat, or battles where a wide array of Quirks are in play. Thus, S is the best fit.
Intelligence
Much like in the original, this Kirishima isn’t known for his academic brilliance. The reason he can comfortably enter U.A. with stellar grades is solely because he’s already experienced this life once before.
Having honed his athletic skills in the United States—a place where only those with adequate grades can even compete—and having studied diligently in high school for the sake of a mentor in his previous life, he now manages excellent grades. Still, his capacity for learning remains rather limited.
If we focus on combat intelligence rather than overall smarts, he’s certainly proficient—but only insofar as it pertains to his own physical movements. Kirishima has no knack for tactics or strategy, so I’ve settled on a rating of C.
Pride
There isn’t much to say here. Kirishima takes great pride in his strength and martial prowess, yet he remains neither arrogant nor self-righteous—he willingly shows respect by bowing to those he deems worthy.
As noted in the title, these stats reflect Kirishima’s abilities as of Chapter 42. I’ll be compiling and posting updated stats for his current status in the original canon soon—but explaining them now might spoil some surprises.
